It's two separate pieces but looks like its continuous.

in regards to butler sink-they are quite hardwearing BUT...if you use heavy saucepans and pans, (ie cast iron, le creuset, etc) be very careful. Twice now I have chipped the top edge of mine, when moving the pots from the washing up side to the drainer sink. The pots are slipperier because they are wet, and its very easily done, especially if using a large crock pot, etc. I love the look of them in the overall kitchen, but the issues I have with them are 1: they do scratch and get marked, 2. the big ones are SOOO big- they use a lot of water 3. the bases tend to be quite flat, which in our experience means they are not that easy to clean/rinse the residue out when you finish the dishes. I had to buy a sprayer attachment for my tap, so that I can "hose" it out after the dishes, atherwise you spend a few minutes having to wipe out all the bits. Might not seem like much, but when you are juggling family, work, cooking, cleaning - life in general, its a real annoyance. I am currently going through the dilemma, as to wether to replace it or not. Slight extension of our kitchen, and moving the sink. Do I keep it (because it looks so pretty) or replace it with something easier to keep clean?? At this stage I am looking into a vintage style stainless sink, like this one: but the first quote I have had, to get one made, is nearly $3000

I BOUGHT COUNTER TOPS TODAY! Hurray. Thank the lord. Break out the champagne. Want to know what they are? Drum roll please... Salvaged marble taken from the shower stall walls of a very old fire station that was being demolished just a few miles from my house. They are an inch thick and will need to have a seam. They have some scratches and look quite imperfect, which makes me really happy as I will not have to worry about messing them up; they come pre-blemished. When I look at them, I will not think of chopped apart mountains but rather strapping young firemen. I feel very good about them. It is so true what people wrote about how ridiculous it is that I spent so much time thinking about this. It is not that it was on my mind daily for a year. I'd leave it for a few months and then come back. I do think that pondering (frankly obsessing sometimes) over my house is where I store my anxious energy over other serious life matters. I wonder if anyone else can relate? It is my outlet. A guilty pleasure that sometimes feels out of control neurotic. Better than heroine or booze I guess! Here is an up close picture of the marble, mind you it needs some cleaning. I will post when they are finally installed. And by the way, PCmom1, I think your green tile was fabulous! Thanks everyone for so much input.

If you can get a sample of the Calcatta, try it out beside the Carrera. It will blend better with all of the wood and give your space a softer look. With all of that light coming in - lucky you - the Carrera might be too harsh. If you decide on the Calcatta, I'd go with a beige subway tile similar to the picture and, with the Carrera, white. Keep it simple. I like your current knobs - I actually have some that are very similar. I wouldn't go white - they can get grimy. Also, your cabinetry has a more formal feel and white knobs won't make it look country. They'll just look cheap. You can do 3 things with those lonely little cabinets in the corner. 1) you can remove them and float shelves like the one picture (which, BTW, I had posted to another site a couple of days ago for someone wanting an open country kitchen, so I love the look), 2) remove the doors and paint the interior white or beige, depending on your countertop solution and 3) change both solid doors to glass. Additionally, you have that like wood piece at the corner. Even if you don't do any of the options above, consider removing that and making it a little display for pitchers or vases.

Granite is both timeless and outdated. It's as old as the earth and has been used in construction for millennia. So obviously it's timeless. But even timeless materials come in and out of style. Granite is currently out of fashion for countertops so it's also outdated. There's another more important reason, besides fashion, to eschew granite. Mining granite for countertops is extremely un-ecofriendly for obvious reasons. Most people are selfish and don't think about, or care about, the future of the earth and the destruction of non-renewable resources and damage to the planet that occurs from producing their precious granite or marble countertops. For those who do care, there are many sustainable choices for kitchen countertops.
