My new reno'd apartment. Thanks Houzzers!

I bought an apartment at the end of September. It was a fixer upper and I did quite a bit but not a complete gut. I kept a lot of fixtures and will eventually replace some of them, but I thought I'd show you the work thus far. I can't thank you guys enough for your advice and suggestions.

One of the biggest things I did was have the wall that separated my galley kitchen from the rest of the living area. The wall made the small kitchen even more cramped (with that jutting counter - ugh!), so it had to go. I'm an avid cook and single so I saw it better to have a larger, more open kitchen, instead of having a formal dining area. I also installed a new island with a concrete countertop. It's gorgeous and has had multiple coats of wax put on it, but I still have to be vigilant with spills. (It soaks anything up: water will discolor the counter but will eventually dry up and the color will return to normal. I had a couple of oil spills that I didn't notice and now I have a couple permanently darker spots.) Any suggestions you may have are welcome.

I did the most work in the bathroom:
    - Bathtub refinished with pure white
    - Bathroom floor retiled with white Moroccan tile
    - Vanity replaced
    - Vanity light replaced
    - Mirrored cabinet replaced with flat clean mirror

Not pictured but I also pulled out the old metal laundry hamper I had hanging off the wall across from the toilet. I had one of these in the bathroom I lived in my old apartment and I know I'd never use it. It looked something like this: http://www.bignyc.org/inventory/item/gowanus/vintage-wall-inset-mount-metal-hamper

It's super cute, but I just never used it. So I pulled it out and had cabinet shelving built into the space. So ultimately I still have lots of shelving in the bathroom.

Not much changed in the bedroom other than the new flooring and slapping up some coats of paint.

The new flooring (which I'm pretty unhappy with) is a click bamboo. I would not do it again. It feels very fake and, with the colder winter, it's separated with unsightly cracks all over the place. Going forward, I might do bamboo again, but I definitely will never do click flooring again. Definitely nailed down flooring only.

Wow, Piff! Your reno is like a breath of fresh air. Love the accents and details. I am sorry about your experience with bamboo flooring. It looks great though!

Thanks a ton Lori. In terms of making it feel like a home, I'd say I"m about 50% there so I still going to obsessively browse houzz for inspo.

Sometimes I wonder if the terribleness of the flooring is just in my head and it's not such a huge deal.

Nice. Very clean. Love the kitchen splash. You should post these pics on the Houzz thread that asks if subway tile is dead. I think not.

Wow. You've done a beautiful job. I think the bamboo flooring looks great - especially compared to the old carpet. :) It makes me want to Reno something! :)

Brickin - I'm convinced that not actually living in the space when I renovated it all was the different between 3 months of renovations and 12.

oneofeleven - Thank you so much! I like my kitchen a lot too. It's certainly the most ~styled~ of the reno projects in my apartment.

Jessica, 123, Michael - thank you very much, all!

Shuler - I will go find it!

KBR - Definitely what I was going for since I'm an eastern exposure so just wanted to let as much light into the living space as possible.

avamagnus - I wouldn't be able to spend any time on Houzz without craving renovation projects.

We had same issue with our click in flooring..we doubled the under lay foam, this really helped with warm and sturdyness..the floor did not feel very "attached" before..the double underlay fixed that for us!!!

Congratulations, it looks wonderful. You should be giving advice on here !

I love what you've done and it has given me inspo as well. Have been searching for a repurpose-able piece for a kitchen island and have about given up and moved on to just opting for a new one. Tell me, did you build yours yourself or ordered through a cabinetry mfr?

I know what you mean about the flooring, having been one of the last trades to go into a lot of new houses, some of the "wooden"flooring is abysmal(?). When you see and walk on a good quality "wooden" floor product that has also been installed by experts the result is fantastic!. I love what you have done - a great reno.

@everyone - I'm grateful for the positive reinforcement. It's hard to love something when you're a lifelong renter and now you own. All you see are the flaws. Thanks to all!

@Jackie - This is excellent advice. I've spoken with the contractor and we've agreed that he will re-lay the flooring next winter once the floor has gone through all four seasons and we see where it's at (what it does when NYC summer humidity is high ). I'll be sure to suggest we do double corking underlay.

@Liz Brady - In fact, I hired a contractor who built it himself. It's very custom. There were times in the middle of the reno when I wish I had gone for an industrial stainless steel prep tables (like the kind they have in kitchens) as opposed to a built in island. It would have saved me several thousands. I'm very happy I went with what I have but if costs an issue and you like an industrial look, I think those tables can be a great meal space/cooking space.

@Ann - I love the beveled splash too! I felt very strongly that whatever tile I went with, it was going to be sort of 3D-ish and touchable.

@moggie - thank you! my friend painted all of them! She has major talent.

@Erin - It is my number one piece of advice whenever someone tells me they're thinking of reno-ing or buying. "Whatever you do, make sure you get real wood floors!"

We're also considering pulling out our metal laundry hamper and trying to be creative with what do. I'd love to see the cabinets you replaced in its space.
