Blank canvas Please help design my canvas

I have no clue on design. I'm trying to change my front room into a dinning room, we have a very small kitchen. This is a blank canvas, so please give me all your ideas. My husband would like more of a formal look. We really don't have a certain look in our house. I would also like some ideas with the arch ways. Should I eliminate them? I think we have more of a eclectic look. Would love to know what look we do have. size of my dinning room is 11.5x16.5

Where is the room relative to the kitchen?

Here is one inspiration for you. I think the first step is for you to go through the photo section and put together an Ideabook for yourself with the Dining Room photos that speak to you. That will help with your style. Then tell us how many people you want to seat and if you prefer a round or rectangle table. Others will be able to give good suggestions when we know a little bit more.

Keep the arches - they provide architectural interest. Consider the practical first - where to place a sideboard (what length will work best), how many people do you want to seat typically? What size table / shape table will best accomodate that number - some smaller tables are great for 6 but will seat 8 for a holiday. Some tables come with leaves, to expand. One look for a room like this open to others, to give it formality, is to paint this room in a deep accent color - I can't see your other rooms, but since the walls are neutral, nearly any shade will work with that palette except golds and yellows. A persimmon would be striking, navy would be classic. Do you currently have any furniture that you want to use or contemplate using there? What is the finish or wood tone - all of these are drivers for the contrast and color choices. What accent tones do you now have in art or textiles in the main space? Denita has got you on the right path to make an ideabook here of your favorite dining spaces - select by instinct and then go back and figure out the commonality and things you like the most.
