Carpentry Question: How to create under-stairs storage cubby.

I want to create a storage area under my stairs as I have no basement, attic or extra room. I saw a clever idea somewhere that showed a way to make the bottom three stairs a portal to the space underneath. They flipped open as one unit, like a trap door in a floor. What do I need to think about as I try to adapt my stairs. What kind of hinges? I want to do this myself.

U could try a piano hinge that connected from your third riser to the fourth tread it's a good strong hinge that will span the width of your stairwell and only be slightly visible but u would have to cut your stringers and that doesn't seem like a good idea... I've seen stair that the risers are drawers too

Google your question, and you should come up with youtube videos showing you how to do it. There's tons of DIY stuff on youtube to teach you just about everything. Good luck.

I recommend looking at the local hardware store for the hardware that is available and designing around these products.

Another idea that I have seen published is to have pull out drawers where the stair risers are.......

Under the stairs spaces can be smart and appealing. We recommend hiring a carpenter because your stairs will have to be deconstructed at the rough frame level. You can use any kind of hinges that you like although your best choice would be a backwards piano or continuous hinge so that the hinging mechanism can be concealed.
