If you want a modern look that isn't too overwhelming, you could always just paint an accent wall a bright colour. In our condo our white living room opened into the kitchen, our cabinets were a dark wood, and our countertops were a very light beige. We painted one wall a vibrant yellow/green and the back wall a bright green. It gave the room a bold look, but it went well with our minimal clutter.
