Photos please. It sounds like you have some concerns as to whether or not to go "light" or "dark". Any hardwood that is stained to a medium brown that tends towards the gray side should do the trick. Sometimes people get carried away with too many colours in a space. I like to keep things down to 3 fashion colours. You have maple = #1. You have dark island = #2. What is the counter top? I have a sneaking suspicion it will be colour #3.

I would have a look towards the counter top colour to give you hints as to where you want to go with this. One thing to do is to decide what the floor is going to compliment and then (almost) forget about the other colours. If you have chosen colours that go well together, you will have a very nice product no matter which one you match it up to...because they already work together.

So here's a picture of the granite "cold spring" and the backsplace "silkscreen" which I LOVE!!! We first were going to paint the existing cabinets white, actually closer to canvas, but the price was so high we decided on new cabinets instead. Again, maple (autumn) wall cabinets and black/brown (sasparilla) island. We have a modest budget,~$4 per sq ft. Husband doesn't care much for grainy wood - oak is out - thinking about bamboo.

Having put in dark floors (acacia expresso) beneath natural cherry cabinets in my kitchen, I can tell you that they look pretty, but the dust WILL show quickly -- so be prepared to live with it or dry mop frequently. My room is large (23x22 ft) and flows into foyer/living room where the floors continue. The dust is the ONLY disappointment (I like open windows so acquire dust easily)...but I've learned to live with it and I'm still in love with the floors a year later.
