Entry Door Brand Bayer

Hello all ! I live in Minnesota where we get -30F in the winter. Need to change my front door to have Better insulation. Seller wants me to go with a MN brand called Bayer even though he works with Andersen and Marvin. Does someone know this Bayer brand? Which material would be the nicest/durable one to choose? Fiberglass, Aluminum, Steel? I would like a modern/Scandinavian look but most important is to keep the extreme Minnesota elements out of the house! Thank You so much in advance for your advice!

TT is more of a crap-shoot. They pioneered fiberglass doors for the most part and their higher end products are well made. The trick is that they don't sell/ship the door assembly fully finished. It goes to a distributor/finisher that completes the assembly, does cut-downs, paints/stains, and then warranty's that. If you find a great one then you are in good shape. There are two in my area and both have had major QC issues in my experience, so I stay away.

One time we ordered a door with a cut-down on the height, and rather than using an appropriate saw/blade to get a clean cut, it was so jagged that it looked like they had a German Shepard chew off the 1" needed. They then proceeded to stain over that.... Because of that (3rd party finishing) its hard to get a good gauge on the quality from one market to the next.

Stick with a known brand with an established reputation. Don't use steel or aluminum.
Insulated or not that material transmits the cold like crazy along the edges. Get wood or fiberglass and consider adding a storm door for added insulation and protection.

We replaced our condominiums' old wood doors with Provia Heritage fiberglass doors. The old doors were warped and these new doors are well insulated and have a good seal which keeps out the cold. We bought no window glass but they're available in lots of styles. We chose the Mountain Berry color.

Provia also makes storm doors.

That's a pretty covered and protected opening right there. Anything from the good replacement door companies will work great here. Provia makes a nice door and Home Guard makes a very nice unit as well.

I will go with Bayer because I trust my local lumber. But now I need to decide in the style. I want to have something modern since my house is old. Do glass door loose heat in the winter? what do you recommend for a modern look with a side light?

Just a state away from you and I've never heard of Bayer. Could be great, just not familiar...

Most door manufacturers don't make their own slabs, it would not be a bad idea to find out who they use for that. Also what type of warranty on the door and finish. HomeGuard and provia are my top 2, and I'd agree with the recommendations on fiberglass for your climate. Wood is fine but its typically less energy efficient and requires more maintenance. On glass, less is better in the realm of efficiency.

I went to my local lumber http://www.lampertlumber.com/ and they also work with a brand called THERMA TRU https://www.thermatru.com/ event though is not the one they recommend more, but they do have nicer designs to choose from. Do you have any experience with this brand? Thanks in advance!

We have used it previously. They aren't bad, but I would prefer to run with Provia or or Home Guard.
