If you provide a floor layout with measurements, I'm sure people will have suggestions for you. Is this for a new build? 9 x 21 though....that's on the 'roomy' side.

I've never seen an unfilled closet.

Just completing a 4000sf home with a pair of closets totaling 8.5'x24' plus another 8'x7' entry, all with either rod, shelving or cabinets on both sides with plenty of space. But an island wouldn't fit. That's about 285 sf of a 4000 sf home for a pair of 70 year olds. Your closet square footage is similar. This closet is larger than those in several larger homes I'm building.

To put this into perspective, you're talking about "her closet" being the size of a one-car garage. Does she really have that many clothes?

"His closet" is about the size most couples share. Happily.

At 9' wide, both closets are wider than is necessary. Consider that a hanging rod requires 24" depth ... so, assuming a hanging rod on each side, you'll have 5' of walking space in the middle of the closet. 3' is comfortable ... 4' is luxurious ... 5' is kinda wasteful, but it is not wide enough to place an island down the middle. It is large enough to include a smallish overstuffed chair, if you're into sitting in the closet.

"His" side is a smaller version on the right side of the closet entrance. Note the high shelves are only within his reach on both sides. The entrance has no doors.
