Hammer & Hand
Hammer & Hand and architect Mitch Snyder transformed a hot, cramped, non-code-compliant attic space into a bright and functional master suite. The existing upstairs attic space had two small and hard-to-access bedrooms and a dangerous staircase. The team added a new dormer on the west side of the house which added an additional 195 square feet to the home. The new space includes a master bedroom, master bathroom with vanity and shower, separate water closet, laundry, walk-in master closet, and option to add a small bedroom (the space is currently being used as an open office area). Additional improvements to the home include an upgraded building envelope, insulation, high efficiency water heater, and minisplit heat pump. Photos by Mitchell Snyder Architecture.

Porter Street Bungalow
Porter Street Bungalow
Moore Architects, PC
The Cleveland Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C boasts some of the most beautiful and well maintained bungalows of the late 19th century. Residential streets are distinguished by the most significant craftsman icon, the front porch. Porter Street Bungalow was different. The stucco walls on the right and left side elevations were the first indication of an original bungalow form. Yet the swooping roof, so characteristic of the period, was terminated at the front by a first floor enclosure that had almost no penetrations and presented an unwelcoming face. Original timber beams buried within the enclosed mass provided the only fenestration where they nudged through. The house, known affectionately as ‘the bunker’, was in serious need of a significant renovation and restoration. A young couple purchased the house over 10 years ago as a first home. As their family grew and professional lives matured the inadequacies of the small rooms and out of date systems had to be addressed. The program called to significantly enlarge the house with a major new rear addition. The completed house had to fulfill all of the requirements of a modern house: a reconfigured larger living room, new shared kitchen and breakfast room and large family room on the first floor and three modified bedrooms and master suite on the second floor. This project consisted of a small finished attic with skylights that was difficult to keep cool and was not safe or large enough to use as a bedroom. This was solved by adding a large dormer to the rear of the third floor to allow for a finished attic bedroom, complete with closet and egress windows complimented by a built-in window seat that cleverly disguises HVAC ducting below. The egress windows are casements, but look like double hung windows to match the existing windows of the house. Construction by Macs General Contracting.

A dormer and main floor addition lights up this lovely 1924 home, along with a whole-house remodel. The new hall made possible by the main floor addition creates a circular floor plan and allows for a bay window and bench seat. The new wide plank oak floors glow with a dreamy brown stain.
