This 1930s home in the hills of Belle Haven had a kitchen that was compartmentalized from the rest of the first floor. Entering required walking through the dining room. Space at the right side of the kitchen near the back door was not being used. Relocating the kitchen's sink, dishwasher and range to the right and rear sides of the home not only opened up the kitchen to be more functional, but also allowed for better circulation. The foyer now connects to the kitchen, and the back door is now in line with the entrance. Elegant, double French doors that open out to the screen porch replaced a small door from the screen porch that opened in. (A corner cabinet with wine bar fits nicely in a corner that was once blocked by the range.) The entrance from the dining room to the kitchen was widened to double its size. In addition, a wrap around counter allows more natural light from the rear of the house into the dining room. Cotton white cabinets from Crystal Cabinet Works and a CaesarStone Noble Grey countertop make this handsome kitchen shine. Photography: Greg Hadley

There’s a reason why gray is one of the most popular neutral shades to use in the kitchen: it’s versatile, yet offers something a little bit different than white. Go with lighter grays, and you’ll end up with a soothing space to cook in. On the other hand, darker shades will give off a bold and dramatic flair. While you narrow down your options, allow the following gray kitchen ideas to guide and inspire you.

1. Light Gray Kitchen Cabinets

One of the best ways to achieve a farmhouse or rustic French country look is to paint your cabinets gray. A light to medium shade will pair beautifully with butcher block or quartz countertops, and will feel a bit more relaxed than an all-white space.

2. Background Color

Whatever style your kitchen is, opting for a gray backsplash is always a great choice. Add character with a mosaic pattern, or go with small and shimmery tiles.

3. Half Gray, Half White

It’s no secret that gray and white go well together, but you may not have thought it was possible to use both on your cabinets. If you just can’t decide, go for white and gray kitchen cabinets by painting the bottom set one color and the top set another.

4. Gray Floors

If wood isn’t quite your thing, you might consider gray kitchen floors. Whether you go with concrete slab or slate tiles, darker flooring tends to hide dirt or stains while offering plenty of style.

5. Kitchen Chic

Go bold with a dark gray kitchen island, and pair it with rich wooden or leather bar stools. It’ll be your go-to spot for casual parties.

6. A Splash of Color

Heather-hued interior spaces can really benefit from a touch of color here and there, like yellow, green or blue. Incorporate color with a rug, curtains or backsplash tile — or even simple things like a teapot on the counter.

7. Gray Kitchen Walls

Most kitchens don’t have a lot of wall space, but that’s just why gray wall paint can be the perfect accent to your mostly-white kitchen. Pair it with white crown molding, and you’re on your way to a nicely rounded-out kitchen.
