Lee Edwards - residential design
This project was built on spec and pushed for affordable sustainability without compromising a clean modern design that balanced visual warmth with performance and economic efficiency. The project achieved far more points than was required to gain a 5-star builtgreen rating. The design was based around a small footprint that was located over the existing cottage and utilized structural insulated panels, radiant floor heat, low/no VOC finishes and many other green building strategies.

JMA (Jim Murphy and Associates)
Home built by JMA (Jim Murphy and Associates); designed by Howard Backen, Backen Gillam & Kroeger Architects. Interior design by Jennifer Robin Interiors. Photo credit: Tim Maloney, Technical Imagery Studios. This warm and inviting residence, designed in the California Wine Country farmhouse vernacular, for which the architectural firm is known, features an underground wine cellar with adjoining tasting room. The home’s expansive, central great room opens to the outdoors with two large lift-n-slide doors: one opening to a large screen porch with its spectacular view, the other to a cozy flagstone patio with fireplace. Lift-n-slide doors are also found in the master bedroom, the main house’s guest room, the guest house and the pool house. A number of materials were chosen to lend an old farm house ambience: corrugated steel roofing, rustic stonework, long, wide flooring planks made from recycled hickory, and the home’s color palette itself.

Having an extra bedroom in your home can be a great asset. You’ll always have a place to let family and friends stay, making it all that much easier to invite company over. But beforehand, you’ll need to figure out how to furnish and decorate a room that might only be used on occasion. While you browse guest bedroom ideas, think about how you’ll be using the space and what sort of decor would work best in your home. And since this is a guest room, it’s always good to keep any potential visitors’ needs and preferences in mind!

Go With Maximum Function

If you’re taking the time to fix up your spare bedroom, you’ll likely want to get as much use out of it as possible. Many people opt to create a guest bedroom office combination, so that they still use the room when guests aren’t over. This could be as simple as adding in a desk and some bookshelves along with a bed. If you’re really tight on space and need some guest bedroom office ideas, you might opt for a murphy bed that folds away when not in use.

Even if you don’t need an office, preparing for any situation is also wise. Two twin beds might be a better choice for your guest room than a full or queen bed, as they’ll accommodate anyone (including couples). And while it may seem more suited to a child’s room, having a trundle bed or bunk beds can also pack in maximum sleeping space for your guests. Besides the bed, consider what other needs your house guests may have. A luggage rack and a nightstand complete with a jug of water are both useful additions.

Think Coziness and Comfort

While you browse guest bedroom decorating ideas, try to make your guests feel as at home as possible. Falling asleep in a bed that’s not your own can already be difficult enough, so make the room feel extra plush. Think plenty of pillows in varying thicknesses, extra blankets and warm lighting. And while you can decorate your spare room in the same vein as your other bedrooms, it can also be fun to get a little creative with it. If you’re on the lookout for guest bedroom color ideas, you might try blues or even yellows — anything that makes you feel in a good mood. Adding thoughtful touches like fresh flowers in a beautiful vase, a cozy rug or a cushy armchair can make the room feel special.

Stick to Budget With Versatile Pieces

Because the guest room won’t be used 100 percent of the time, many people look for guest bedroom ideas on a budget. To keep costs down, try repurposing furniture and keeping things simple. For example, instead of springing for a dresser, provide open shelves or a clothes rack. A vintage chair, box or even a stack of books can all be used as nightstands — while offering a whimsical touch. You can also buy a bed frame without a headboard, and simply add in plenty of pillows on the bed instead.
