A Designer Offers Tips for Decorating With Color
In this episode of Houzz TV Live, interior designer Julianne Bull of The Den Interiors in Melbourne, Australia, shares advice on decorating with color. Bull discusses the benefits of choosing one main color to influence your decor choices and shows how wallpaper can transform a space in ways paint or tile can’t. She also offers tips for renters who want to incorporate color in a low-impact way, such as with a vibrant rug or armchair.

Wonderful discussion with Julianne Bull! Her designs are gorgeous. It's clear the client is foremost in her thinking when she designs the space. She seems to really listen and investigate, and I love the way she's pulled the client's existing furniture and/or art into the space. Beautifully done!
P.S. - NOTE to Julianne: I am crazy about your earrings and would love to know the artist from whom you bought them.
Color and art, especially together, can personalize and/or make a strong statement in a space. I love how this designer does both!
It was beautiful. I love color myself. I loved that golden color in the bath. It was beautiful the way she took that from the Egyptian artwork, which was beautiful. The same with that Indian artwork with those rich colors. I loved the material on the headboard and how she took the red of the birds to choose the color of that lamp. It looks beautiful. That little orange night stand and the artwork is wonderful. I'm going to buy two extra lottery tickets today so if I win, I can fly that designer here to pick colors for my condo.
outstanding! gives me a little clarity in terms of using portrait & wallpaper!
WOW - the colors are amazing!!
Beautiful and colourful project, Julianne.
I love the rug under the dining room table. (Attached below) Would you be able to tell me where it was purchased? Thank you!
Hi Elise, thanks for your lovely comments. My earrings are from COS here in Melbourne. They're made of marble and brass.
the material used on the headboard is lovely. Does it come with a matching wall paper?
Hi Roberta, yes it does! It's from Osborne & Little.
Hi Melissa, the rug is from Cadrys.
That headboard against the dark wall, with the bright lamp right there like a tiny-but-mighty sidekick, is *totally* swoon-worthy. Appreciated the advice on room-to-room cohesion and the focus on genuinely personal spaces. Beautiful.
Is it an Australian or an English fabric? Does it have a matching wall paper?
Beautiful rooms and what great information on color and patterns.
What is the paint color for that beautiful dark green?
Gorgeous design and great interview. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Roberta, it's an English company but they have stockists in Australia. You would be able to find someone online. Julianne
Hi Cathy, it's a custom paint colour by Porters Paints here in Melbourne. It's such a great service that a few paint companies offer when you can't seem to find the right colour.
Congratulations Julianne on your expressive use of Colour. Adds so much personality to an Interior Regards Lyn Lewis
I love the dining room chairs in the apartment shown--where are they from?
Great color especially the two shades of green
