An Open Floor Plan Updates a Midcentury Home

Brian Brockman and Amanda Brinkman-Brockman fell in love with a midcentury home and bought it — but joke that despite their love for the house, they wanted to change pretty much everything about it.

The Cincinnati home’s kitchen, dining room and living room were separated, and the couple wanted a more open floor plan that would give their kids space to hang out and play nearby while they cooked. The kitchen looked retro, and the homeowners preferred modern finishes. The couple had grand plans for renovating. But first they had to tackle a load-bearing wall that stood in their way.

Beautiful. I love the idea of the open pantry behind the refrigerator wall. I'm curious what the dimensions are.

I love the pantry! Open but hidden. I just don't like the angle of the island. The cabinetry grain is perfection.

What a stunning remodel. Very carefully edited and executed. I love everything about it, especially the feature wall in the kitchen, the nice open space to cook.

My husband and I could not agree more with the usefulness of Houzz when remodeling. Our contractors have loved it when we can share our ideas visually with them. we have remodeled parts of two houses thus way, including a master bath, a living room fireplace, a kitchen, a laundry room, a powder room and created our new backyard using Houzz. it also helped my husband and me come to agreement on design and details as well as purchase some items. fabulous resource.

That fridge cabinet (wood trim, white doors) looks super sharp!

IMHO: great renovation - keeping the best of the mid-century architectural bones without the dated vintage MCM décor. And the furnishings really complement the space.

I can so relate to this. I fell in love with our midcentury home, but want to change almost everything about it. It has amazing architectural details, but we're slowly trying to undo all the horrendous mid-eighty's decorating: dusty rose master bedroom (wall to wall carpet and wallpaper), mauve master bath (gold-plated fixtures with peach marble), dusty rose vinyl-planked floor in kitchen (whole kitchen needs to be gutted), and there's wallpaper on every vertical surface: walls, doors (both sides, even closet doors!), inside closets.

The fix for the removable of the load bearing wall is something to behold. They moved the house into the 21 century. The neighborhood warrants the investment. I have never seen so many fine quality mid-century homes in one neighborhood.

oh my, I love the arrival l original house so much. I get so frustrated with people who rip out time capsules. I looked for two years for a non "updated" house and finally gave up with a partial updated home. I'm in the process of ripping out all the updates and making the ad-ons look original. I'm glad these people are happy but why ruin a gorgeous home and make a dated to the wrong century home?

Super remodel job. Congratulations. And a husband who cooks - that's the absolute best. I'd add a few large plants, bc I can't imagine living in a house without them. Enjoy your lovely new home. .

Who is the architect that remodeled the plan of the house? It's amazing! Thinking of doing this to an old house.
