Go Inside, and Outside, a Designer’s Stylish New York Brownstone
In this episode of Houzz TV Live, interior designer Julia Mack gives a virtual tour of spaces in and around her brownstone home in Brooklyn, New York. In the backyard, a deck off the kitchen perches 10 feet above the ground and includes a dining table and herb garden. Inside, the hardworking kitchen features easy-maintenance porcelain slab countertops and backsplash and flat-panel cabinet fronts without hardware for a clean, contemporary look.
Mack also highlights other renovations she’s done to the 150-year-old home. She removed walls to open up the layout and connect the entry, living room and dining room. She tucked a tiny powder room below the staircase. And she shows how she plays with textures and tones to create warmth and design depth in a small space.
Beautifully Done!! Amazing contrast between the before and after, Kitchen is so inspired.
Have worked with Julia on various interior projects and she never disappoints!
Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm so appreciative of your continued support of my design work.
This is beautiful and wonderful ideas!
This is so beautiful Julia - and you look gorgeous too! Love the modern kitchen and deck. Now I want to know what you cook!
Interesting to hear the story and background of your beautiful home, Julia!
I love your home! You did a wonderful job creating a comfortable place with many creative touches. You transformed the building into a truly special place.
Beautiful design! A great shift in space removing the wall by the living area. Not keeping the kitchen wall and adding the glass is inspirational.
Stunning and smart choices. Nerd question: where is your coat closet?
I am never disappointed by these Houzz TV videos! The designers who are featured, their spaces and the length of each segment are spot on! Thank you to all!
Julia, I've only explored your work in your clients' homes before, it was really fun to get to see your work in your own home! I can't get over the backyard transformation and I love that you found those historic doors.
Terrific looking renovation
Love the integration of old and new design elements!
Everything about this house is both functional and beautiful. Warm and inviting.
Beautiful flow to your space a nice sense of comfort and welcoming spirit with style. Know any designers to recommend in Portland or?
Beautifully creative, warm, and livable. Love the historic doors and back yard.
Really love the sleek cleanliness of the kitchen and the back garden design is exceptionally good. Love the pops of color in the living room too .
I love the kitchen, it's the one that I want, but the porch is a dream.
Beautifully done, I especially Like the kitchen leading to the back yard. Do you have a screen on you sliding door to keep stray insects out?
I loved the glass doors. I live in a Brooklyn brownstone too and I have wanted to put in glass patio doors for 20 years but I am afraid to cut into the structure. That kitchen island is amazing. Thanks for the tour of your home & sharing your ideas.
Love this kitchen, who is the maker of the cabinets, both white and wood?
Wow, what a gorgeous job, modern yet cozy and warm. This house just invites you in. To look at, it feels like a house that's in a less urban environment than it actually is.
Confused about the kitchen... Not the same features in different photos. Are there before/after shots?
Love it all but especially the openness to the beautiful backyard.
Julie, I was knocked out from the back yard terraces. Absolutely gorgeous. An oasis that surely doesn't look like Brooklyn I remember in the 6o's. The 70's mushroom tables in the living room and chairs in the dining room are super cool. Love the kitchen. It's marvelous and so was your vision of the first floor. I enjoyed hearing about the entrance hall reno, removal of the living room and dining room walls, as well as your eclectic artwork. Thank you for letting us peek inside your beautiful well designed home. Enjoy. Bravo!
Beautiful, really captured the personality of this building, it is also functional, and interesting around every corner, loved this
who is the porcelain countertop from and what is the name? It is beautiful..
Thanks so much for the lovely comments, the kitchen cabinets are by Scavolini and the countertops are from Porcelanosa and yes, there are screens on the sliding doors. For additional photos please see my Houzz profile: https://www.houzz.com/pro/juliamack/__public
Thank you for all of these kind words about my interior design work, I’m overwhelmed by the positive feedback and am so pleased with your comments. I do try to bring the same design sensibility to all of my projects, my own home included. As my clients know, I’m dedicated to proportion, scale, form and function plus pops of color, layering of textures and objects and 3 forms of light in all spaces, my home is often my laboratory and I definitely live what I teach.
