I know that this home is on the ground, but it feels like they are living in a tree house, and at the same time, on a raft. LOVE everything about this home!

Seriously, wow. Hard to take it all in - so much thought and vision in every detail. I love seeing things I've never seen before. That tub with the Bocci light fixture made me smile so much. This is not a style that I usually gravitate toward, and yet I saved almost every picture.

This is absolutely my dream home. One of the best integration of outdoor and indoor living I have seen. What a joy it must be to wake up in the morning in this home.

I'm not a big fan of modern homes but this is spectacular! So many modern homes feel cold but not this one. Cudos to all that put this one together.

What I want to know is how do two people with normal sounding jobs afford to not only be able to live in SF, but also build a second spectacular home? Perhaps Houzz can give me some financial guidance since we are also two working professionals, but are just living what I call a regular life, an ordinary home and that's pretty much it. Are we doing something wrong?

What is it with Texas? It must be something in the air. Many of my favourite places on Houzz are in Texas. This one is no exception. What a fun place! Nothing austere about it. It must be all of that great wood which warms it up and gives it such a human feel.

Houzz is about architecture and design, not about the means by which people can afford to build their dream house. This home is gorgeous, and we can find small details to inspire us in our own lives.

Wonderful human scale. I echo the comments of people who said they would not normally like this type of style; but this has been done skillfully and sensitively. Having just built on an awkward building site ourselves, I also admire how they rose to the design challenges of this site. Well done all around.

I've been a fan of Lake Flato Architects since their beautiful design of the Carver Academy in San Antonio, Texas (built in 2001 and now Idea Carver Academy). This lakeside home is visually inspirational - a harmonious masterpiece of home and its surrounding environment.

It's a lovely home, and perhaps Houzz might find some homeowners who take a more DIY approach to a second home like this - maybe who can do it as primary residence?

I am building a new home with an IPE floor in my screened in porch. My builder has had problems in the past with using oil based sealers in this floor. Do you know what product they used to seal their IPE flooring?

Beautiful home, but once again I am amazed how people can plan a retirement home that will not accommodate any mobility disability (either of their own or other friends/family). Making a home "visitable" means you can entertain your friends who may need to use wheelchairs or other mobility devices, and where you won't be forced to move or make expensive modification to your home at the same time you are coping with a new on-set disability. While the current owner is a tri-athlete, that can change in an instant. Most people live in denial of their risks for becoming disabled as they age...but the reality is over the age of 65, 1 in 3 has some form of disability.

I appreciate that the steel beams appear to be painted a deep chocolate brown. much more in keeping with the overall color scheme of the home.

the total look gives me a simple-modest impression but it's very detail and not only connect but also respect the nature.
i don't know, even without the lake, this house is already "complete".

A very nice house, but as a retirement home, they will regret not having it entirely wheelchair / handicapped accessible. We designed and now live in our retirement / dream lake house, and as we age, we find that our “no step” design has been a blessing.

Seriously wow! Who doesn't want a swimming moat, stuff of childhood dreams.

This home is absolutely breathtaking. As others have pointed it, older age brings physical challenges that you never expected. Mother in law had a beautiful tri-level home on the lake. Three years before she passed had to move and sell it. She was down to living in the two rooms that had no stairs.

This house is out of this world and by far the nicest project I have ever seen on House. I Modern build houses and sections of homes (Home Improvement) project that are modern and this gave me some great idea. Thank you. Really amazing!

Stunning exercise in architecture. I'm not sure how it would feel to actually live in this house. I would feel much too exposed.

This is just a gorgeous take on a modern lake house. Having grown up staying in lake cabins and now being a boat owning lake lover, I'm considering building my lake house as a retirement home.

A few notes on making this more real world friendly. The garage is really a glorified carport. You can't store anything nice in there because critters have access, not to mention prying eyes of nefarious humans. All that exposed red cedar is pretty but a maintenance headache. I'd go with a lap pool with a small dipping area for kiddos that would wrap to a hot tub. Also, built in nooks for TVs are nice, but technological advancements will date it quicker than your 1970s intercom system.

As to how they afford it, you have to look beyond job titles. Generational wealth, family largesse, selling a business or investment good fortune could all explain how seemingly limited wage earners can afford such a home. Be happy for these folks! They are building a spectacular retirement the way they want to do it.

Phenomenal! This Ideabook is outstanding. In the intro, you mention that the architects “came up with a simple L-shaped plan”. I must say that there is nothing simple about this house. There are a multitude of architectural details that come together to make up the whole - it is astounding. I love it all. I have this bookmarked so that I can go over it again more slowly to really appreciate all those details.

Lovely home. I agree with many that this is a favorite home and presentation by Houzz. Well done architects, owners, and Houzz. If one understands that "art director" means lots of things including activities related to tech heavy Bay Area, the financials question would not be on the table... But really, I'd just rather enjoy the home!

Wowowow! The architectural team did an amazing job. I love, love, love the light fixture over the tub in the master bath. So fun! The whole place is unbelievable. I keep looking at the pictures and find different aspects that astound me.

I am not surprise, Lake Flato creates some of the most fantastic and beautiful buildings. I am a huge fan of their work and living in San Antonio I have easy access to some of their work and it is awe inspiring.

Beautiful home, fits perfectly with the topography. I do wonder about "critters" in the carport. Having lived in this area and experienced run ins with armadillos, scorpions and snakes!

I can't say that I am a fan of the dining room chandelier or the thing over the bath tub but everything else I love , love , triple love !

I love the style and design of this house. I would enjoy seeing more details about the home's systems, specifically, the HVAC, which is invisible as far as I can tell save for the one vent shown in the bedroom wall above the door. The heat and more especially the humidity in this area can be quite oppressive.

With all the accolades to the home owners and the design team I would like to say that the Contractor and all the subs played an enormous part in the success of this build. You don't get these results without them and it is about time that they get the recognition they deserve. Nowhere in this article are they mentioned but when most of the details make this house the builder is the one who esthetically and physically brings the 2 dimensional drawing to life. Come on people lets give those deserving men and women who built this the credit also!!!

I live in the Austin metro, and I'm wondering with all these windows, how do you keep the house from getting super hot? We have to have our blinds down much of the time with that Texas sun beating down on the house.

I am always curious how much the land, the architect, materials, labor, furniture etc cost the folk who have these homes built or remodeled. I'm sure it's uncool to ask, but it certainly seems as important as all the information and comments.

I have done many remodeling on my home and office building. I'm an attorney and a builder, but I know the cost all depends on where the project is located. It can vary depending on material used and crew that works on the project.

Love the setting, the floor plan and the materials. I don't see any art. I would miss having art on the walls.

This is like being in the Tate Modern....with the comfort of Zen. I'm also loving the landscaping simplicity; the punches of color also make me smile. Stunning design!

There are too many variables that affect the cost of construction. I think it is better to gain ideas from case studies such as this one and then research the costs based on the geographical location.

In response to those who wondered how this couple could afford it based on their job titles, someone mentioned family wealth or good luck with investments. The other possibility is that she is essentially a banker and he may be an art director who works on movies for a major studio. If so, each could earn a significant six figure income. Just a thought.

I love the horizontal lines and in particular the board formed fireplace - I guess I don't get the lap pool when you have a lake out the back door. Water must me yucky or cold?

One more practical comment....I'd hate to have to carrying groceries (and everything else) the distance from the carport into the house.

I would love to see the garage door operate. Call me crazy, but I'm intrigued by the use of a simple pulley and counterweight system to open the door. Just too cool! Neat to contemplate a simple machine being used in one very original ultramodern home. Absolutely stunning.

fscarlett - 2800 sq ft is restrained when building a new home in this neighborhood - most folks want to build a fake Tuscan palace or something equally huge and ostentatious. Congratulations on a stunning home - I love it. Fabulous design, flawless execution and it fits with the environment!

While I admit the architecture and interior furnishings are a great blend and totally fitting to the lake-side location, the thought that came to mind first was how noisy it must be with people inside---
anything so open has to have issue with noise not being contained.
Maybe w/no children this isn't a big problem for just two people...

Although the pictures are amazing, I think in order to have a true sense of the layout and beauty of the home, I would have to walk through it. Perhaps analogous to seeing a picture of a beautiful shell on the beach or walking on the beach and seeing a beautiful shell.

Great home. I wouldn't even want to speculate about the costs. As others mentioned it really depends greatly on the location and how well the trades in a general area are used to doing certain techniques, availability of material, etc. But it sure wasn't cheap :-)

I shudder what it would have cost on the East Coast. I had two bids from plumbers for wall hung toilets. One was $1,700 the other $1,300 and that is just to hang one toilet (I had 7 to hang). Reason, nobody (or I couldn't find anybody) here seems to have ever done residential wall hung toilets and they are not comfortable with it. The same for linear shower drains, no curb showers, etc. It seems we are still stuck in Center Hall Colonial or now Nantucket style design with some transitional elements thrown in.

Not sure about the climate in Texas but it would have been interesting to know how the cooling, heating, shading is accomplished in a space that open with the amount of glass they used.

So I can only look with awe and envy at this house or some of the Australian designs featured on here :-)

This home could get this CA girl to move to TX. (Probably for just a short time.) All I would need is a barn for my horse and a doggy door somewhere. And I loved the fixture over the tub. It made me smile! And it would be amazing to watch the weather roll though.

I would love to stay in the guest quarters to see this amazing house for myself! We are renovating our mid century ranch on a five acre lot, and almost were not allowed to do it due to all the codes and regs. Buyer beware, check codes before you buy if you want to add on. Kudos to this couple who made the most of this amazing space.

Wow, I used to be such a traditionalist when it came to house design, but more and more I'm drawn to this seemingly simple (but know it's not) design. I love the separation of space without making it seem so; it feels extremely livable. The Murphy bed idea is brilliant; why not use the space when guests aren't there, very smart. And the views from every room is remarkable...love the water and oaks...perfect!

The materials used is probably the highlight of this house. From first glance, the living room's glass walls only contain an empty room. It only looks empty from outside and it was pretty surprised to see the furniture in the later pictures. I think that more houses should implement designs like this. http://www.scottequip.com

What is the window washing bill per month? How is this home heated during the Texas winters? The acoustics of the interior must travel pretty painfully from one room to the other with more than two people in the home at the same time.

I hope they do enjoy it, but there are enough different treatment ideas for six houses, so many that the photographs are difficult to look at and they represent the space as one of constant edgy restlessness.

I've never liked a modern house (even showcase - expensive, like this one) ... until now. This is truly spectacular. I can't find anything about it not to love. In fact, this might even be my favorite house on Houzz. I'm gobsmacked!

now that I'm partially over the wow factor, I have to ask one practical/critical question:
how do you keep birds from flying into the reflective windows? I'm imagining some unfortunate groundskeeper having to dispose of the poor things every day.

Really love modern architecture but all nearly all of the modern designed house cost multi million dollars. Given that the chair in this house cost 1500 a piece, I take it as this is a multi million project as well.

I'm a huge fan! Each view is a composition of simple forms but with a warmth that invites you in!

Love all these geometric lines and shapes in the interior, they create such as smooth flow. Also love beautifully done landscaping. Great designs are so inspirational!

Wow!!!! Amazing. Being a person who spent all my summers at the lake, plus several other days there as well, this is the "ultimate" Lake House. (or cabin, which I've always known a Lake house, to be) I think it's "The Ultimate" for several reason:

This is a VERY well thought out home. A big reason why is because, the attention to detail is on another level and because of the practical size. My parents just sold our lake house & also sold their large home, in order to downsize. This couple not wanting to get in over their heads is brilliant! I believe it will be manageable for many years to come, with no problems or having to sacrifice the home later in life. They utilized every area, to be purposeful and practical. Murphy Beds? Workout Room? Incredible. Not needing to buy furniture or decor, just to fill spaces? That is such a great idea...

~The one thing my parents missed the mark on downsizing was having guests. The separate wing, with 2 separate living spaces is genius! Spending the majority of the day together with others is a lot of fun, but having a place for privacy for an afternoon nap and at bedtime, is priceless.

~The textiles and finishes are outstanding. I love the contemporary feel, but staying true to the Lake Living Lifestyle, by going heavy on the wood. You immediately realize that once again, a well thought out plan gives this space a very modern, current trend of having a great room. Those walls wood walls thought, remind me SO much of our lake home, even though our place was very traditional, in it's style. They both give off that comfortable, warm, inviting lake feel.

~2 more observations: (sorry I'm rambling) -the views and the window placement, paint a picture of perfection, calling for hours upon hours of just sitting and enjoying the view, rain or shine! The sense of peace and serenity you get from that environment are picked up on just by looking at the pictures. I literally can smell the fresh, clean air after an afternoon thundershower. (super corny, but REAL)

~Lastly, (I know! I'm getting sick of me, too) I am blown away by the way they put together the sidewalk/deck/dock! Something so simple, like a vertical pattern give such life and interest to something that is usually, mundane or boring. It brings the outside and inside together seamlessly.

~I know there's more elaborate, luxurious, much larger lake homes in existence, but for the reasons above and so many more (see.. I'm nice, I could've gone on) I think this is "THE ULTIMATE LAKE HOUSE".. (for me). Enjoy your time in there, it's well deserved!! xo

Outstanding! One comment regarded "Why Texas?" I am aware that a great many California retirees relocate to Texas, especially Austin, because of substantial tax breaks. For me, California's desirable climate and remarkably comfortable weather would be a huge personal sacrifice for the humidity and heat of Texas. However, the tradeoff is space - as this home so perfectly demonstrates. This story and couple clearly exemplifies the Texas Frontier Movement (at least 20 years strong). Certainly, access to a lake was a smart and fortunate move for this couple and the huge windows truly make the house. (Indeed, it will take the endurance of tri-athletes to stick with the enormous upkeep of such a home.) A few beautiful indoor plants and fine art, are all I would add!

So, this house was beautiful, but flooding in Texas and that river. . .and I agree, aging in place seems ignored.

I would love to be one of the dogs. No worries. Jump in the lake when you get hot. Chase squirrels when you get bored. Be comfortable and still in the middle of nature. Sigh.

Very well done - I wouldn't know where to be as there are so many beautiful spots! AS far as aging as someone mentioned - these folks are tri athletes - so I think there plan is that this home will help to keep them in tip top shape.....!! Lovely! Simple earthy and natural beautiful work of art.

Admittedly absolutely gorgeous, well designed, top drawer. Edifice to ego, huge, environmentally disastrous lawn right down to the water so every one can not avoid seeing the giant house. Look at me look at me!

Beautiful house but unfortunately no environmental protection for the lake. We should keep at least 15 ft to 45 ft, depending of the slope, with a forestry belt , no bed flowers but local plants, shrubs and trees. All the roots retain and prevent the natural nutrients ( phosphate, nitrogen) going in the lake. We see too many lakes deteriorating rapidly and I can't understand this kind of landscape is accepted by the local authorities in 2016!!!. At least don't put herbicides and fertilizers on your grass because you will add fertilizers for algae and aquatic plants growth. Grass can't prevent it.

This is magnificent

The architecture and setting are spectacular BUT people in Austin really need to think about their landscaping, particularly the expanse of lawn. Nearby is the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and they have fantastic people there to help residents choose landscaping elements that have a lower footprint and provide much greater wildlife benefits. Not no lawn, just less lawn. That aside, this is my favorite house ever on Houzz (hope they didn't flood!)

love this house as well-wonderful details, views and living functionality. takes full advantage of lake views and lawn area of lot. only thing i would change is the fireplace/tv area-can't enjoy fire while watching tv apparently, and the fireplace is a little too understated for me. otherwise quite an amazing and interesting house.

This was a beautiful well thought design. I especially loved the glass exposing the outside in and the kitchen idea of putting everything behind a wall. I loved the fold away bed in the bedroom so that you have open space. I'm going to be buying a home in the fall 1500 sq feet and I have got to focus on less but meaningful space.
