Houzz TV: First Comes Love, Then Comes a Wildly Colorful Mosaic Home
While making repairs to their run-down house in Venice, California, artists Cheri Pann and Gonzalo Duran experimented with adding mosaic tile to their bathroom. They became so fascinated with the medium that they’ve spent the last 21 years covering almost every square inch of their home — inside and out — with tens of thousands of shards of colorful clay tile.

I absolutely LOVE it!
what a beautiful piece of art everywhere
An assault on the senses. An example of just too much of a good thing!
This is just, just awesome. How wonderful to live in your own creation of art, and to actually get the chance to change it every day, and to see it grow throughout your lifetime. Wonderful...
The "Like" button just doesn't do enough. If I could hit it 10,000 times I would.
I am reaching for my sunglasses.
Fantastic !!!!
Wow! This is living the way you want to live! I'd be interested in knowing more about how the curves are made, and more about what appears to be a fence or gate of different colours and things hanging off it.
It is interesting that the walls of the studio are white! I guess that is easier to work with!
Thank you for sharing! I love how they have created a house that continues to evolve with them. I'm looking for this house next time I'm in L.A.
Now THAT is what I call colorful. I love a lot of color, but honestly the only thing I could see myself with is the staircase. It's beautiful.
Truly inspiring in so many ways...Thanks for sharing. The world is our canvas.
Gaudi would be proud of you!
This wonderful work of art/home reminds me of Niki de Saint Phalle's sculptures. In San Diego, near Escondido, there is a park devoted to Niki's work...simply magical...just like this home. Thanks for sharing!
I may have to rethink my neutral palette!
PLEASE come to the OC!!! We have too much BEIGE!!!!!
What is your address?
In my next visit to Los Angeles I want to visit.
Gaudi yes, but more so (or should I say less? : )
Niki de Saint Phalle & Jean Tinguely - Les Bonnie & Clyde de l'Art
long video
This should make the white haters happy
I am speechless.....too, too much. It makes me dizzy. I cannot imagine being in this house when you have a headache.
I hope this beautiful home is kept as some sort of trust or museum for future generations. I wouldn't want to live there full time, but it's quite beautiful and inspiring.
Gaudi wasn't the only Art crazy !!!! I love, love, love your colorful creativity :)
"…hired him to help build the studio--and then I started kissing him. And it took off from there." I love this lady.
To me, their home is secondary to their chemistry. That's what caught my attention.
Why not? Color, design, creativity-a real treat for us all.
What an amazing work of art and the people are a treasure as much as every piece of clay or mosaic set into the structure. I want to come and see this in May this year when I visit California. What street is it in Venice?
I couldn't think or rest there. No comfort. I suspect their minds and mine work differently!
Simply fabulous! Kudos to both of you and to Houzz for making the video to share this colorful place with the world.
Gosh, how original and cool! Love that the owners are confident enough to do this. Kudos!
I love when someone really follows their dream for their home - so awesome!!
Amazing! That is love!
It makes me SMILE!
I love the idea behind it but the color mix is kind of obnoxious.
Like the nice little love story too!
That's a happy couple. So creative. I'd only change the kitchen..I'd need more monotones to cook.....
While I certainly appreciate the diversity of "taste" offered by Houzz and homeowners, as with anything in life, there is a point to say "stop". How much more beautiful to have select pieces in each room and several throughout the yard that one could focus on and enjoy. As so many designers emphasize, when your eye doesn't know where to look because of the clutter, it's time to edit.
I wish I were that brave....however, I wonder about the amount of places dust can accumulate
Houses like this make everyone stop and wonder...why can't I be that brave? While the kitchen is a little much, I applaud their creative spirit!
I adore mosaic tile, but in this environment, there is nowhere for the eyes and brain to rest. It would be overstimulating for me.
A National Treasure!
I think I smiled from ear to ear watching this video. I visited a place in Cuba tiled like this, but this couple's story make this unique and the fact that they're incorporating whatever is lying around (tools!). I love how she "started kissing him." One of the best Houzz stories ever!
I'm a Minimalist so all I can say is- Ach mein Gott!
I applaud and appreciate their individuality and love their love for one another. But I just can't help but wonder what the house would say if it could talk...
Love love it. What fun!!
Wow! This is like mosaïc paradise, especially the studio!
fantastic, insane, awesome, inspired, crazy, wonderful. bravo.
I admire the passion they have but, I felt dizzy just even watching the video. Love colors but, not to this extent.
"....the kitchen was a mess..." Huh? The kitchen is still a mess! But I guess the colors and shapes distract from the clutter and lack of organization. I LOVE color, but this is too, too much. Interestingly, the studio is less cluttered than the house itself. Looking at the video actually made my stomach a bit queasy.
These are the type of people who help us see the world differently. Thank you.
Well, to each his own!
A living work of art! Lived-in anyway. I am truly inspired. I am also a mosaic artist - but mine are in paint not clay. My CC&R's wouldn't let me have this much fun, but I WILL do a wall inside my house!
This is so inspirational!!!!
They seem such sweet people; I would love to be neighbours with them.
Totally awesome! It's alive!!!
when I was a kid, my dad painted our white picket fence every color he had purchased on sale. Each picket was a different color, the gates were neon orange and yellow. He then added suns, moons, flowers, anything he could think of as well. Everyone called our house the Hippy House, but to a kid it was awesome. Now as an adult, I love color ! this home is not my cup of tea, but it makes me smile and the owners look like a very happy couple. Enjoy life and your home to the fullest !
Laurel Skye, in Arcata, CA, has mosiaced not only her entire house and studio, she's also done the seven trash can containers in the Arcata Town Square in aquatic designs. Check out the images on Google... we discovered Laurel and her artwork by asking around Arcata who and where is the artist that did those containers??? Absolutely made the whole day for us...

Now that's fabulous - there is a mad energy out there! People live in that house!!
The address is 1116 Palms BLVD, Venice, CA..
You can google it under GOOGLE MAPS; "Mosaic Tile House" In Venice, CA
their love certainly shows in their art. it's a love explosion. beautiful.
LOVE IT. Wish I had the talent to do mosaic!! So creative, original, personal.
Perfect for Venice, California!!!
Wow. What project. It looks amazing. I can certainly understand why it took 21 years to complete!
keep it up ,if that's what makes you happy well done !!!!!!
love, the love story!
One of my favourite places is the Giant's House in Akaroa, New Zealand. It has amazing mosaics all through a very beautiful garden. Definitely worth a visit if in that part of the world. http://www.thegiantshouse.co.nz/
They are adorable!!! Good for them. I'll have to seek them out on our next trip to LA!
Wow! I wish you both would come to Houston and buy a house in the Montrose area and do something similar. I would volunteer to be your assistant for free to learn how you do what you do. It is amazing!
Love this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so awesome
If more people did what they really loved and not worried about " resale " value, can you imagine what homes would look like ! The world would be full of one of a kind, funky, artsy, colorful, and much loved homes. I hate going to a housing tract where every home is the same. Most have only 4 elevations, 4-6 base colors, trims, brick and or rock. Same roof material, one little tree in the front yard, etc. SOOOOO boring, yawn. I love the older established parts of any town where the homes reflect the owners, past and present and so many different ones all on one block. Now that is what a home should be, not a builders template.
Thank you Kingrubu - I also visited Giardini di Tarocchi (Tarot Garden) outside Capalbio - it was amazing I thought of it right away upon viewing this article and couldn't remember the name so thank you for posting the info & website. Love this couples love story
Oh my goodness. I am a huge fan of Antoni Gaudi. This is the closest I have ever seen to his creative imagination. LOVE. I will definitely make a pilgrimage to Venice, California to witness this treasure for myself.
I knew this had to be in Venice before they said that on the video. A bit over the top, but if they like it, I am happy for them.
There are works of art like this, like the Giant's house in new zealand, like Gaudi, like http://americanart.si.edu/collections/search/artwork/?id=9897Â - wonderful and overwhelming obsessions. Most artists create a thousand pieces, but there are those who make one piece with a thousand parts.
Just....wow!
WOW!!!!!! It's amazing, but you missed a spot, you forgot the roof. ;-)
Love the art studio, only thing I can say about the house and grounds is, 'holy crap.'
Freakin' ugly and a total eye-sore. Fugly. One of the ugliest houses I have ever seen. But whatever...and it figures it would be in CA. I wouldn't pay or drive out of my way to visit, I'm grateful I don't have to live there or near it, nor clean it! Yeah right, how the heck do you clean it? Hoard alert, gah. It looks like dumpster-diving on steroids. Two-words if I was mayor of that town/area: bull-dozer...
how awesome that they can express their love and creativity in their surroundings. they radiate joy!
I visited the mosaic house this winter. This amazing house that is a true work of art is also a witness to a wonderful love story. The details are incredible.
Love the music! It really compliments the vibe of the mosaics. It's awesome!
reallygreat , thank you very much, and congratulation !
Stunning ... The results are awe-inspiring. If I were building a small, simple home, which I hope to do one day, my dream would be to work with a visual artist to itegrate art into the design. I'm just not sure how I would go about finding and working with an artist to accomplish this. Any advice welcome.
Love it! True work of he(art)! The people that don't like it? so what! It isn't posted for them, anyway! They are the vast majority of off white, grey and beige people! They are the majority! (or COMMON!) I love it that they spent all that time creating, eventually for OTHER people as well as themselves! Diamonds are easily spotted in the rocks....lovely! Thanks for posting different and interesting homes! LOVE the different!! Inspiring!
You either love or not. While I like the bright, vibrancy and uniqueness, I don't think I could live there without going crazy - or being crazy already ;)
Oooh. Um.
I'm glad it works for them, but oouuff. I don't even want to know how much effort it would take to keep that clean.
Two people living their lives to the fullest and doing what makes them happy. I just love the excitement!
What a beautiful expression of their dreams!
Good for them...but way too much for me.
So loving and creative.. Wonderful video
wow, just wow
