Incredible Home Catwalks Make for Purr-fectly Happy Felines

In 1988, when home builder Peter Cohen moved into his house in Goleta, California, two roaming outdoor cats came with the property. Shortly after he moved in, one was killed by a car and the other was hit by a car. This prompted Cohen to keep the surviving cat indoors. Soon after, he began rescuing cats that nobody wanted. Before he knew it, he had 18 on his hands.

My favorite part of this article is that the price was given for the cost of the project. When the cost is given it helps all of us set realistic goals, expectations, and budgets if we want to do a similar project.

Hi kealkill.... Thanks for bringing that minor detail to my attention . Fancy not seeing those cats.... I thought it was wallpaper.
Looking too hard I reckon. I suppose I was expecting to see cats in every photo you know doing their thing running down the slide in photo no 1......going up the stairs in the bathroom or at least a photo of Peter with his entourage. 

I laughed when I read about the cat guarding the tunnel entrance and not letting others pass! Sounds like our beloved Rudy, a stray who became part of our family. His nickname, Rude-a-Tude, perfectly described his kitty swagger.
He has long since moved onto another plane of existence--hoping he's spending one of his cat lives in this kitty heaven on earth!

I appreciate the thought put into this, how the cats can't be more than an arm's length away and the tunnels can be easily cleaned. The part about cats blocking tunnels made me laugh - they can be stinkers! I am curious, though, what has to be done to have a koi pond with water safe for cats to drink.

Photos don't do this house justice. I've had the pleasure of experiencing it firsthand and I can attest to the serenity of the 18 cats that live therein. Peter's home (and also Bob Walker's book) were my own inspiration, and I contracted Trillium to build catwalks in my own home last fall. I love them and so do my 4 resident cats and 1 border.

Having multiple cats, lots more than 18, all I could think of was who is up there cleaning all that and all his cats must get along beautifully because mine would be knocking over plants, swimming in the pond, blocking paths so no one else could pass, etc., etc. What a wonderful world for his cats.

It is heartening to read that there are people out there with as many or more cats than we have. I don't usually tell people that we have 22 because they judge and say things that are not nice. We are very active in rescue so likely there will be more coming into the fold. They all get along well and I know having more upper spaces to traverse will enhance the household harmony. This year we are having a new house built and cat spaces are a top consideration. I can hardly wait to have it all come together.

What a great house! Just a quick note: the cost of living in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area is comparable to the cost of living in LA. One website said it was slightly more expensive to live in Goleta/Santa Barbara. Sadly, we're all paying too much for housing in California. :((

Mr Cohen, your home is absolutely beautiful! The colors are uplifting; the knotty wood cabinets and the tile floors are warm and inviting. I have seen many lovely homes on Houzz, and yours is the BEST! The catwalks are very artistic and I believe add to the charm of the home. I too love animals, although we are down to 4 cats and two small dogs. Sadly, we buried our last sweet horse three years ago. Kudos to you as an artist and an animal lover.

I almost didn't look at this article because I don't have any cats (allergic, love them though!) but am glad I did look. The house is aesthetically and artistically beautiful and personal....the materials, colors, plants, decor.....and I am truly inspired! I am an artist who lives alone and now I see I could "untraditionalize" and personalize my New England home in delicious ways without compromising the functionality or saleability down the road.

I am very interested in seeing more examples of artsy homes that play with color and decor in unique, creative ways the way this homeowner has done!

Well it's nice to see there aren't only crazy cat ladies out there trapped amongst a hoarded herd of furry friends. This design gives a whole new meaning to shaking one's little tush on the cat walk. This is one purrrrfectly cool cat pad that must have those cats feline pretty happy to live there. I'd say this project's designer has a keen cat's eye, that just steals my breath away. No doubt this is a project that has clearly landed on it's feet.
And as Ernest Hemingway said, "One cat just leads to another."

We have 22 rescue cats living in harmony with 10 rescue dogs. We have a large garden (8000sq ft) with lots of trees, in the midst of olive groves and mountains. The animals are able to roam freely, there are no roads nearby and all the dogs and cats have the run of the house. Our house is clean, fresh smelling and hygienic because we have chosen all the elements to be animal friendly, easy to clean and hard to damage. This wonderful article and equally wonderful man has inspired me to start building in some of these features for our cats. I am so impressed with the energy, creativity and beauty of this house. Thank you.,

Absolutely beautiful, and I love the colors. My cats will have to continue to make do with the many stairs, steps and window ledges in my house, but we also installed an enclosed cat litter box area vented to the outside (through an existing chimney from a woodstove the previous owner had but removed). It is wonderful to have cats but not the odor! The cat "box" has a hinged lid and is inside the utility room, with a cat flap so cats can get in and out, but the dogs can't. Food and a bed are in the utility room outside the toilet box, for a cat sanctuary.

Love it. Wish I didn't rent so I could do this in my home for my 5 (all strays). I also wish someone sold a "removable" (removable so I can take it down without a big mess on the wall to fix and can put it up in a new rental) kit for indoor cat runs that would include ways to go under the top of a door frame since renters can't cut holes in the walls.

Love the "Cat TV" (fish tank) LOL. I had fish for a while and my cats spent hours watching them. They were gold fish (bought "feeder" ones - they were being sold for food for larger fish at 25 cents each) who can live 20 years, are smart, social and actually interacted with the cats (and people) as they came up to the tank (as opposed to the beta fish I had at one point that ignored anything not in the tank). My cats found the gold fish far more interesting than the beta fish. Trouble I found is that fish seemed to be harder to care for than cats LOL.

The other place I'd like something like this is in my very small (13') camping trailer. That is a small space fro 5 cats and having vertical space like this would help with the spats that take place on occasion...

Very dangerous for kitties; very appealing for humans with the shapes and colors. If kitty has a seisure on a high ledge, if they argue and turn quickly to escape, it will be a tragic end. Cats love to be up high, it is their nature to want to climb, and a tree gives them bark for gripping. These cat walks offer nothing similar to the outdoors. Having the walks cross over hard surfaces such as the bathtub makes me shutter.

When the kitties get older these structures are a disaster. I would never want my older cats attempting these structures. After Blossom had a seizure I removed the three tier carpeted cat tree.

Also all the house plants can make them sick if they eat them. Cats do not always know what greens are good for them.

But, some people do not like older cats and they get rid of them once they show signs of aging.

I think your structures are NOT cat friendly. A great amount of money on these designs that only offer pain and suffering if kitty falls. Oh, cats do not land on their feet every time they fall !!

It can cause moderate to severe swelling to the mouth of a cat or dog if the plant is chewed, making it difficult for the animal to breathe or swallow. It might be a good idea to switch out the plant for something else.

This is awesome! Love the shark head with open mouth as an opening. I used to have 18 cats but I lost 4 of my babies to cancer. I am down to 14. When I brought the youngest in I told the vet he was "the last one" and he said to me "Until you pick up the next one".
I live in area with no shelters that take cats, much less no-kill shelters. The no-kill shelters outside of my area have huge waiting lists. So I ended up with a bunch of kitties that I rescued from the streets. Some of them were literally in the road terrified out of their minds (they were only kittens). My oldest ones were actually brought here by their mother who pegged us as suckers. She dropped two litters of kittens on our doorstep. After the second litter we had her spayed and she disappeared (I hope she just went back to wherever she'd lived before). We have about 32 acres of land so the cats have plenty off room to roam.
I wish we had the time and space to be able to have all the cool spirals and passageways for the kitties. We definitely need a better litter solution. If we ever have a house built we'll have to see if we can work in at least one room designated for kitties.
In the meantime, I'm planning to put some shelves above some of the doors where kitties can sleep.

I LOVE THIS. When we adopted our cat 14 years ago I wanted to build catwalks in our home, but it never happened. (He's indoor/outdoor, so at least gets his space and exercise outdoors.) What you have done is artistic, thoughtful, creative, wonderful and tasteful. The way you have blended it all into your home design and decor is fantastic! How fun for your cats, and entertaining for your guests! I also love the aquarium, my childhood cats loved to watch fish swim! The tunnels, the litter boxes - so clever! I have passed this on to my three sons for ideas, they all are cat lovers and plan to adopt when they settle!

A true cat "lover" would NOT endanger their kitties with high narrow ledges. Keeping pets safe is the first responsibility of pet owners. These designs are for the amusement of people! Look at all the attention the home owners are getting from you that approve. When they find their kitty on the floor with a broken neck, will they tear it all down?

lu2677 - I also considered the ledges might be slippery for running, wrestling cats. I assume (and hope) there is something on the ledges for grip, since we cannot see the surface. If not, the owner can easily add it, and also some type of railing if he felt it necessary (and I'm sure it would be equally tasteful and artistic in design.) He is obviously very creative and seems to have considered many things in his design. Let's not beat him up, I think you made your point. He is doing a good thing for cats, as well as inspiring cat lovers everywhere.

I thought my house was pet friendly but he's got me beat. I always take animal's need into consideration when I design and decorate and mine have the big outside area with the cat fence. I think plenty of people would buy this house (I would) and he probably isn't interested in selling it. I like that he did exactly what he wanted to do without worrying about what other people think. That's what we should all do. I love that there are so many animal people on Houzz and I love that so many people like this house.

To corinan and others, I saw an episode on TV where a dog was actually "crazy" due to laser light playing...it grew to monster proportions, the dog was affected all the time by light after that....I don't remember the specifics, but after seeing that I would never use laser for such again. I was told by a trainer that you can put your Cat on the treadmill, but I have not tried it yet.

Those shelves may have anti slip stair treads on them. For the snarky remark about cat smells, they do Not always stink! I have 7 cats and three 18 gallon plastic storage boxes with litter in them that we clean three times a day. A friend of mine (famous for her ability to smell and her forthrightness) insists my house does NOT stink. She can't smell a hint of cat. The hair problem is another story! I've used the cheap carpet covered cat trees for years, my cats adore them. Maybe I'll get several more, maybe link them up. That sounds like fun! One of my cats, now nicknamed "Spiderman" used to climb the cat tree to the wooden curtain rods and walk around the room of 8 linked windows. He had to back up to get back to the cat tree! .

Boarding cats. Don't you wish boarding facilities would design some of these ideas instead of cages? Cat boarding doesn't seem as popular as dog boarding and it's hard to find any that take cats, but I think given these ideas popularity would expand.

WOW! For years I've patted myself on the back for a cat-oriented bedroom I designed for the nine-year-old son of a client. We ran a 14 inch wide shelf across the long wall of the room (above the window), leaving about 2 feet between it and the ceiling. The shelf was carpeted with easy-care, indoor/outdoor carpet.

We hung a jungle-art mural on that wall, below the shelf, then applied a 15-inch die-cut jungle border to 1/4-inch plywood, trimming the lower edge with a jig-saw, and incorporating cut-outs into the design. Then we attached the border piece to the front of the shelf with L-brackets, leaving about 9 inches open at the top.

In the two corners, we built a series of staggered shelves to serve as stairs (at each end of the shelf). These were concealed behind plywood trees. The first time I saw the cat in its jungle, there was nothing to see, except a twitching yellow tail, hanging out of one of the peepholes!

Both the young man and the cat were very happy with the result and I've been very proud of it for years. Now I bow to a master!

The house is terrific. The care giver's are exceptional. I can do the odor mitigation. What I can't do is the hair management. Three animals here drop hair that can get to be a half inch pile in an out of the way corner in a week of activity. How are all of those travel routes kept clean Really -- -- no, really, I'd like to know the secret.

Wonderful to see this house! Gives me great ideas for my 6. Right now it is how to use my 1926 garage just for them -- a destination for fun. 4 of my own and 20 cats and kittens from people tossing them in my yard was how I learned about the town I moved to. But I was able to keep them safe, get homes for them and medical care. 12 years later I only have one rescue from the animal shelter and she had no idea about trees or fun. My 6 are aging like me but trees inside, lots of construction tubes for tunnels, and patience (and constant house keeping) works for me. Thanks to Peter Cohen, I have some new ideas and that garage project (looks like a barn) might be really fun for me too.

Would like to know the colors that were used. Beautiful combinations and love the house and atmosphere. We have a dog" tale" about cats. Years ago we adopted a severly abused large (German shepherd/Great Dane) Dog named Sam from the animal shelter. He had been so abused that he wasn't able to be kept with the other dogs, but instead was sheltered in the cat house and was able to run free there. He felt safe with the cats. After several weeks at our home he felt confident and safe and would lay on the deck surrounded by our cats. He groomed them daily and our cats all looked like punk rockers with spiky hair. The cats loved Sam. We loved Sam. He stayed in our family for many years.

Hooray for Houzz readers (well most of you anyway.) I got 2/3 of the way through the comments before someone started shaking a finger at all the "poisonous " plants. Duh, people, this man has had cats(big plural there) and plants(big plural there too)for years, I'll bet. I know he's had cats for years, cause I read the story. I'll bet he's had plants that long too. Now, he didn't mention this, but I'm guessing the number of cats he's lost, or even had get sick, from all those "toxic" plants, is a big zero (0).

Here's the thing you might not understand. Those lists were compiled in laboratories by force feeding captive cats (and dogs) with plants, or substances extracted from plants, until they sickened and died. Given a choice, cats are much smarter about eating what's good for them than people.

Now, if you choose to keep only plants that are not on those ***** lists, then your cats will probably eat them down to nubbins. Or they might not. Cats are famous for having peculiar tastes.

A much more sensible question is how do you keep the cats out of the plants. Okay, in all probability, Peter sometimes finds a plant laying on the floor, with that number of cats running around. I have 6 cats, and 15 or 20 plant sitting around, and in the last 4 years I've found a plant knocked over maybe 3 times. Not enough to make me get rid of either plants or cats, but each person needs to make their own decisions.

How to keep the cats from digging in the plants? There are a couple of strategies that have worked for me - large decorative stones covering the surface of the soil looks nice, and is no fun for kitty to dig in; also, a piece of chicken wire squished together a little and set on top of the soil will work. Some other things you might try are balls of aluminum foil or pieces of cardboard cut to fit. You can also stick to hanging plants.

Other approaches that might be helpful are providing "kitty greens" for them to eat - try different kinds to find the ones your little darlins' like. More toys, play time, and places to climb (ala Mr Cohen.) More, or cleaner litter pans - I have only 1 pan available to my cats, but it is cleaned every day.

So, Peter, LOVE what you've done with the place, cat-wise and plant-wise. Judging by the comments, looks like you could sell a book on the subject.

Thank you Ficus Wrangler! And for all the other nay-sayers, get a hold on reality. These cats are indoors. They aren't outdoors where a gazillion things can happen to them. They will climb to high places in any house and can fall - just as they could outside. They will taste plants and learn - just as they could outside. What they are getting is a much enlarged "world" (not perfect, not completely safe but again, way more perfect and safe than outdoors) where they can explore and exercise, examine and enjoy. Mr. Cohen has taken an approach that's very cognizant of the needs of cats, as well as their incredible ability to learn and adjunct. Bravo!

Also adding to Ficus Wrangler: I use pine cones in all my potted plants which look (well, are) natural. Never had a problem digging although the occasional pine cone becomes a "ball" to batted about (Stuart and Stirling love the noise on the tile and hardwoods).

Where are the plans? I need guidance for some of this. Man, this home rocks . . . love the colors and the dynamics. As for some of the 'cautions' I read, I'll just remind you all, gently, that we're loving 9-lived critters with great arrogance of being, that will not be sheltered past their limits of tolerance, and that will survey the kingdoms they let us provide them. After all, they've innate skill for trees without flat planes for walking or fencing . . . would that I was that balanced at my age!

lu2677: I surmise this cat owner would have changed any structural element in a millisecond had he witnessed any danger to his beloved animals.

Having said that, you do make a valid point that a cat does use it's claws (and other body systems) to grasp onto an object for leverage when losing it's balance.

I am sorry that you obviously had a terrible accident with your little cherished kitty.

Please give us Houzzz readers who are also champions of the Cat World a bit of a break. We are as interested in advancing and protecting our felines as you are, as is this wonderful gentleman who has provided a terrific home for his darlings.

My cat, Doris (AKA H.R.H. Doris T. Katt), has already sent pictures of this magnificent home to my contractor who is just finishing up a total remodel of my house. Seems like there is a lot more work to be done to make her happy. Interestingly, someone wondered where all the cats were in the picture. To me, it seems odd that there would be any cats in any of the pictures unless they were caught taking a long nap. Doris hates photographers.....unless, of course, if they bring treats.

I've always had house plants and I've always had cats - none have died due to the plants yet, probably because we don't have plants that are poisonous. Due to being indoor cats, most of their health problems have been due to being overweight! Our towering cat tree has been the best exercise equipment ever for both the older and the younger cats. If cats have something to do and keep their curiousity aroused, they won't bother the plants. Ours are loving sitting in the "jungle" amongst some larger potted plants we got from my mom's funeral this past summer. They'll be so disappointed when the plants go back outside this summer.

We have cats, plants, trees, fences, roads and dogs (they are indoor cats only when they want to be.) cats don't need to be monitored and helicopter parented like some are suggesting.. They're animals, they have instincts, they do a great job of looking after themselves and showing love, only when they want to of course! This house screams love for his rescue pets, it think it's a remarkable achievement and artistically presented. Well done!

What a beautiful house! Love the colors. The cat walks are very tastefully done and in no way detract from the beauty of the house. Very fortunate kitties! I would buy this house in a heartbeat.

As far as smell, for our 3 cats, we put up a "grow tent" in the basement with a filtered air exhaust. It exhausted to the outside. It contained 4 boxes and we only opened the zipper entrance about 15". My father, who is not a cat fan and freaks out about cat smell, always said he could never detect any cat smells in our house.

This is beautifully done. Certainly the best pet friendly home I have ever seen. I'm very sorry that one of the posters had an accident with their cat and that the homeowner had accidents with his cats being outside. Animal lovers tend to be passionate people and it hurts us terribly when they hurt. Having said that, I can try to keep my cat off the tops of cabinets but as soon as I leave the room or go to sleep he is going to do whatever he wants. All you can do is love them, try to keep them happy and hope for the best. I am sure these cats are very happy indeed.

About the cleaning, why would it be any different than cleaning up after ourselves, is my thought. People have high up shelves in their 12 foot ceilings..so they have ladders, telescopic vacuum wands, etc. etc steamers....Now MY catwalk is a different story, it was our first one and I cannot get in there to clean very well because we only made a few access panels (had offered a friend's kid to climb in there and help, but he changed the subject). I, too, would love to see youtubes of this place in action. And I three would LOVE to spend some time at this place! Cats are so very fun to be around. Someone asked about ventilation, etc. I am interested, too. I'm told ozone cleaners (greatly reduced in price now) help keep odors down. Designers: I'll buy the book and even copy edit it for free...PLEASE!!!!!

lu2677: Give the guy a break. I'm going to assume that with 18 cats and numerous years of having them with, obviously, plants and fish tanks, that he knows how to take care of all of them. You don't spend 50 thousand dollars in designing your house to be more cat friendly if, pardon the image, he was watching them drop dead like flies every other day from seizures, falls from high places, or eating poisonous plants. We can't see the shelves up close so as far as you know he may have put a thin strip of carpet on the tops so they can be gripped easier. I wouldn't want my cats jumping from one slippery board to another either, especially high up, so common sense would prevail. Since he has pics of his cats, we can also surmise that he specifically picks plants that cats won't chew or get sick on. So...try not to hyperventilate so much. Really.

RULES FOR THE CAT
1. The cat is not allowed on the furniture.
Alright... the cat can go on the furutnrie, but NOT the kitchen counters.
Okay... the cat can go on the kitchen counter, too; just not when I'm preparing food. Deal?
Fine... the cat can go wherever it wants as long as it doesn't put a paw on my face at 5:30 in the morning demanding to be fed.

The cat will be fed at 5:30 in the morning.

Cat owners are no more unique than any other pet owner that takes the well-being of their animal(s) seriously. I am not a cat lover, just a lover of MY two cat. When I rescued them I made a pledge to myself to care for them in the best way possible. If I had the resources and the right, I would be all over this in my house. An entertained pet and a pet that is allowed to exist in a manner that takes into account its instincts is a happier, better behaved pet.

MATTSON11 - Go upthread a ways (quite a ways...wow, this is a popular post) where I talked about cats eating the plants. To sum it up, cats generally won't eat plants that are on the "toxic" lists, probably because they taste bad. Also, they tend to spend less time nibbling on plants if they have lots of other stuff to do. You can also grow "kitty greens" specifically for them to eat.
STEVEDENVER - Funny comment. Made me laugh. Thanks.

I try to buy all cat and dog friendly plants, but frankly, for the most part, they ignore the plants. I am going to try to plant some cat friendly grass, as all the pets are crazy to sneak outside and get some grass to chew on...each owner knows how its cats react to plants..as far as I know. But it's a good point in case it's misleading to some.
I wish all plants in stores would say cat or dog friendly. I suppose it's a liability issue.

I can't stop looking at this house ! It's just so amazing. My Chloe cat would love it. She's never ever tried to eat any of my plants....though she does enjoy watching me water the plants and waiting for the water to flow from the bottom of the pot. Then she will delicately dip her paw in. Does anyone know the name/and or artist of the large square cat picture shown by the koi pond ??

Dear Shawn. We've been discussing this at several points in the above comments. There are many of us who've had cats and plants - plants from the so-called toxic list - together for many years, and no trouble to the cats. We think it's because cats don't like the taste of "poisonous" plants. (BTW, the lists are called toxic, and that's different from poisonous,) If you're interested in learning something about the reality of the situation, you can read some of the preceding comments.

In my garage catwalk, we used 18 " closet shelving so we made another tier so other cats could go around. I have loved cats since a little farm girl. My lawyer said when we were little possibly, if did not receive enough love it can cause us to befriend masses of pets. Smile. I admit it! My sisters were too old to play with me and...now it's even worse! Chuckle. Without kids, it makes sense to me to share. Grabbed another picture, outside the garage, there is some outside exposure.

Wish I had someone to build those ramps for me. My little ten year old Sarah has been climbing the wood trim up to the sleep loft since she was a kitten. Nine feet straight up! The wood trim has been replaced twice. Wonder what eighteen cats would have done? My twelve year old Rocky still plays with his toys, but uses the stairs to get upstairs. Each cat has their own personality.

Katerlyn animals give lots of love -- no bargaining and no conditions. I was known for bringing home stray dogs from age 8 to 11. I grew up and moved to PA where I lived next to the Delaware River. Huge change for my life. Lived where geese, ducks and foxes had people (including hunters) to help them when hit by cars, when they emergencies and had to be rescued. I got involved with some of these rescues and I think all those dogs I "rescued" as a kid had much to do with why I loved being involved with rescue.Today in a city I have cats that I rescued. They bring much to my life now that I am old. I loved the Houzz article and seeing this wonderful house but your garage ideas give me a starting point on my budget for how to fix my barn/garage for my cats. Thank you for the photo.

It's very clever to have made it so cool and interesting for people to look at (as well as awesome fun for the cats) without seeming at all weird (which let's face it, in the wrong hands it might have)! I love it. Also, I a little bit properly love this person for doing so much for his cats. Faith in humanity: restored! :-)

As a pet containment specialist,(jargon for Invisible Fence Dealer) we keep cats in the yard,or,from escaping. Once that is ensured, this is fabulous for fulfilling cats' nature. I had friends in Montreal in a vertical triplex that had a "cat walk' for their three. It greatly enhanced the lives of their pets. This is waaaay beyond that!

chsgrl76 I think they said he put them in closets and had special ventilation for them to carry the smell out of the home instead of moving it throughout the house. Something similar is done with spice kitchens or areas of homes that have strong smells that need to be removed. I don't know if each litterbox area had its own designated vent to take air out of the house and replenish with fresh air or if the litterbox areas all tied in to a system of ducts separate from the HVAC of the rest of the house.

wentzell, how do invisible fences work-- and how much space can they cover. I would like to keep my cats out of certain areas of the yard to keep them away from the dogs, but I also want to keep them from leaving the front 10 acres to go into the woods outside of the property line. I'm fine with them going into the wooded areas in the back 13 acres and the barn and such, but I would prefer for them to stay within the fenceline.

@Barbara Brandt Thanks so much for that comment! It makes me think there should be a cat walk/ cat enclosure web site like Houzz for CATS! If more people would make cat walks to contain and make the cats safe when they want to be away from us humans, more could be adopted (including ferals like I have)...more people would adopt who have said, "I cannot have a cat because my dog would drive it crazy".... We need to get the word out, like the Walkers in California started with their "cat house". As it is, I look to www.instructables.com for ideas all the time and also on a regular basis I google (AND SEARCH YOUTUBE.COM) "cat enclosures" and "cat walks"...and recently I asked Yahoo.com to send me the same search results whenever something comes up. If anyone knows where else to set a search please let me know because I constantly CRAVE ways to make my cats happier. Restore stores (Habitat for Humanity) are an excellent way to get materials inexpensively (windows, closet shelving, trim, shelves, carpet, linoleum, tile)...to create these projects. HOUZZ could you start a CATHouzz.com --smile linked-- to your site?

Katerlyn: My wish list includes one of those neat chicken houses I see at garden supply houses. I actually have one attached to my garage and have been learning how to fix the roof. There is rot in the supports. I never have enough extra around here to buy the roofing materials because the house I bought was one of those bottomless pits. But when I found the ferals and they were pregnant, I set up a 8 x 4 plywood platform in my basement (for warmth), bought two large kennels for comfort and then found the animal shelter spay programs that I could afford. I did get homes for about 6 babies and then there was a virus that was traumatic to live thru but I kept another 6 that survived. Today they are my old cats. I did take another rescue that was in deep trouble at the shelter (30 pounds of trouble). I go to the horse feed store in my area to get pkgs 3 cu feet of mini flake animal bedding to use for litter and I use large black plastic mixing pans from a big box store to use for litter. Works very well and economical. I have to wild animal proof both the chicken house and the barn-garage since when spring comes they are always going near the road. I want to install the steel framing fencing which is very economical -- used for orchards here but labor is pricey for installation. I started this too late in life so I will have have to sell or auction many paintings this summer to get all of this done by next winter. Meanwhile, I think there are some very creative animal lovers reding Houzz and that is fun to know.

@Barbara Brandt Sorry this is off topic. First thoughts: do you have a Restore near you? If so get online access to watch their donations that are for sale. Closet shelving works outside and is cheap at these stores, works like cage barriers and looks okay, coated (not the poisonous zinc coating either that galvanized can have)...also I found wood pellets work better for me, I have tried horse bedding. I could be wrong but I think pellets go further for the cost, not SURE though. Something I came upon, I was using 20 cent aluminum roasting pans from Costco, or the larger ones sometimes...and the wood pellets just slide off. But for several cat area, I use a huge on sale rubber container with lid, with hole to enter, and two WALLPAPER PANS...had found them at an ACE going out of business store, they are awesome cuz they are as wide as the cats AND they empty into a small garbage bag for easier and faster cleaning up! As you know, this kind of litter just flies into the garbage rather than the mess clay litter makes. It can be burned and ashes used for fertilizer OR composted (not for food gardens), etc.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I recycle the bedding in one of 4 composting area. NO clay. I use the roasting pans for my painting projects which are pretty much ongong. The black heavy plastic containers are at big box stores with outside equipment. Very cheap and last for years -- I have an old dresser from the 50's that I use as a hideout for the cats -- Good will has these cheap. This type of dresser has wooden base under the drawers so the drawers can be used in other projects. I have two antique beds that the cats use in the winter.

Two missions: Ian Dunbar is a great trainer and his goal is to get shelters to train all the dogs so people are more prone to adopt. If we could get more ways to make our houses cat and dog friendly...that would be a plus as well (to lessen euthanasia rate of wonderful pets). Here are a few more ideas. My next project will be to design cat walks to open all the way along the track...and get the word out. Something simple that most could do themselves and removable ones for apartments.

A local casino has ridiculous looking hangings from the ceiling. So I realized it would utilize space in my 12 foot high ceilings where ferals are (have excess furniture). Check this idea out and let's brainstorm! I FINALLY found what I am talking about to a small extent, I googled how to hang upside down furniture. I figure the cats can walk around it...some artist had beautiful wood things hanging from ceiling for their cats which made me think... http://www.psfk.com/2013/01/uk-bar-steve-smith-ceiling-furniture.html#!v3lsp http://decorating.answers.com/holiday-decor/hanging-upside-down-christmas-trees-from-the-ceiling

Narrow wallpaper pans are easy to dump (wood pellet litter) into garbage bags and they seem just the right size for most of my kitties. I put them in large tub containers, cover the container and have hole cut in. I see you can blow dry first and then cut the hole easier after plastic is heated up.

Also, I found a way to get some cat beds my cats love very inexpensively. Sam's club has empty cardboard boxes for things instead of grocery bags. The last few times I've grabbed some of the tyson chicken boxes. I put dish drying mats in two of them. Even without the clothes, my cats were swarming around the boxes and take turns sleeping in them.
Captain Fluffy liked the box with the light colored dish drying mat.

Product here in NJ are wood shavings from Canada 100% recycled pine. Not sure what the measurement is 92 L is on the package but that is not pounds. I use 2 of these huge packages a month for 8 felines, changing very large containers ( 4 black heavy duty for cement mixing) daily (4 t- inches of pine shavings per containers. No dust. The only drawback is that they are shavings and you have to sweep the area around the boxes each day because of paws. The shavings come in 3 sizes -- dust (like saw dust) a small shaving and a larger. Farm supply stores sell several brands of this product and it is used for bedding for horses and other farm animals so farm stores usually have a huge supply. I have not seen this at big box stores or Walmart and pet stores sell very small amounts for huge prices. This is light weight, recyclable in gardens, and economical.

zannej - Feline Pine makes a clumping litter. It used to be very light, like sawdust. They changed the formula to make it clump better, and it is heavier, but is still a good, non-dusty litter. It can be difficult to find. In my area, it is available at Petsmart.

Life is not risk free, for people or for cats. My cat's favorite outdoor spot is an open area between the ceiling and roof on our porch. He'll jump on furniture or the closed barbecue grill to reach the rafters then cross them to get to the enclosed area. To get down he'll reverse that route or sometimes he jumps from the rafters to the concrete floor below (an 8 foot drop) despite the fact that I've mounted several platforms (to use almost as stairs) to make that journey easier and safer. Seems to me, giving a large number of cats pleasure (and assisting their needs to be up high) on a daily basis outweighs the risk of a cat potentially developing seizures and potentially having one at the wrong time. I'm sure someone who has a cat with seizures will see this differently but in 60 years of having cats I've never had one with with a seizure disorder and I've never had one injured in a fall from a high spot they got themselves in to.

Obviously a cat with seizures is a special needs cat that would require different accommodations. I have a friend who adopted a completely blind cat (he was born without eyes) from a shelter and she was amazed at how well he can get around and even jump from one object to another. So even cats with disabilities may surprise you.

Looking at the spiral thing, I would probably need some sort of railing at the higher parts for some of my less graceful cats. One of the cats I rescued had an inner ear infection that has permanently affected his balance so he falls down easily. My two oldest cats also have some trouble with landing on their feet and have a little bit of trouble with losing their balance. I think some of my younger ones would knock other ones off of these things. LOL. They love to tussle and tackle one another.

I don't know if I could ever do this for a cat. I guess I'm more of a dog person, though.

I have a copy of The Cats House and love that you have taken the idea to the next level! Your house is spectacular and your cats are indeed fortunate to have such loving "pets"! I know that in my house, the cats are the owner and I am the pet.

Fantastic!!! Just love it. The man's right. It's impossible to stay miserable with a purring cat on your lap, head, shoulder or draped around your neck. What a great and happy looking house. Best argument yet for decorating with and for the things that make you happy.

Lovely home aside from the cat additions and even better with them. (My cats did fine with plants...only a problem for some. Also, even in old age, my cats would manage most of these pathways. A sick cat with seizures might be another matter...)

@Trillium Enterprises-I just lost one of my cats to breast cancer. I am still on the fence about getting another and your pictures of Chocolate and Cheesecake are pushing me over. If they turn up missing just look for a red Honda on the Westside.

Its all so beautifully and professionally made. Still 18 cats in one house is not something I'd ever aspire to. Imagine the vet and food bills. I did think that these ideas could be adapted to make a wonderful communal cat hotel facility. I've already seen several that go some way towards achieving this but not quite to this extent.

Yes, agree with Insail. The comments about plants and cat seizures are bordering on the ridiculous. Sometimes you've just got to trust your pet and go with whatever happens. As a past and present owner of both senile and elderly infirm pets, I can assure you that they know their own limits. My 16 yo granddog (lives at the grandparents) has diabetic seizures occasionally when not on medication and he spends his days lounging on the sofa - a far cry from the antics he used to get up to. In other words he knows his limits as these cats will if they ever get sick. As for eating the plants - this is largely urban myth. Animals have inbuilt instinct that prevents them from eating highly poisonous things - I would suggest for indoor cats that there is a pot of grass for them to nibble if needed.

Love the wonderful haven he has created for his kitties. I fantasize about being a cat lady, and if that ever actually happens, may be Bob can help me catify my place in a similar fashion. Cats deserve to be adored, pampered and happy. Love Bob for being so devoted to his cats. Serving animals is very good karma.

Wonderful places with great imagination! I just worry one of the cats will knock down the perched plants; our cat loves to push things off surfaces just for the sheer pleasure! You would love to see a cat owners' place here in Canada, BC. They adopted a blind cat and had built by a builder a complicated wrought iron metal maze that connects the outdoors and indoors and is huge! It is made of wood also.

It's fabulous but it's missing one thing.. a catflap. I just don't understand having 'indoor' cats. They're not supposed to be kept indoors. Sure, if you live on a busy street there's risks, as there are for all of us everytime we step out of the door. I've had cats for 50 years that have all come and gone as they pleased through a cat flap. They need to smell the air, climb a tree, catch a mouse!

The cat shelter here in Santa Barbara recommends, and is part of the contract, that cats be kept indoors where it is safer. Indoor cats are healthier and live longer. Not to mention we have a pretty significant predator population and cats that are out at night have a high risk of becoming coyote chow. My cats are indoor only and will remain indoor only because I choose not to risk their lives when I don't have to do so. As for "not supposed to", who says?

Here in the UK our cats are all 'outdoor' cats although we don't use the term as indoor cats don't exist and I hope this American fashion doesn't creep in. Cats need access to the outdoors to express their natural behaviour. They have a natural tendency to explore so allowing them access to the outside world gives them mental stimulation and reduces stress. Would you like to be imprisoned and never go outside? As for declawing, that's barbaric.

Hi Kimberley, a lot of people in australia actually have structures made that link the indoors with the outdoors. This way the cats can be inside when need be, usually at night and explore during the day, weather permitting. Also, the implementation of these structures means the cats will not endanger our natural wildlife and they themselves will be protected. In regards to declawing, cats can use scratching posts and other specific related products, available from all pet stores.

My 2 cats are front declawed so we insisted on buying a house with a staircase for them. We purchased in June and they have not 1, but 2 staircases, a bay window to lounge in, a fireplace and the best of all, a tree house in a Saucer Mongolia. Because of it's Bush habit and lateral spread they can climb all over the tree and jump on top of the garage. I'm not sure how to break it to my husband but they are totally getting a catwalk now! Thanks for sharing this awesome home!

Kimberlyallen when I was growing up the farm cats were okay for the most part outside. Now I live here again, and if a cat gets out, it's almost immediate death by coyotes (or car). There are many ways to intrigue them in the indoors...many of us have learned the hard way. Also there are fleas and disease, worms, etc. outside. I agree with declawing being barbaric, along with war.

Un-f-ing-believable! Even without the cat amenities, the house is BEAUTIFUL – made infinitely more so by the cats. Can’t I come live in a spare room? I make a great cat sitter.

Kimberleyallen - I suppose you don't spay or neuter either, b/c that wouldn't be "natural." Sigh.

Katerlyn - Sylvester Goes To Jail made me laugh.

Houzz has featured this cat-friendly home in a much earlier article. Being a crazy cat lady myself...( the most I've had at any one time were an exquisite male Siames cat and two Siamese mother cats, The "girls" both gave birth withing 2 days of each other...12 kittens in all. 15 cats. One of the mother cats lost her milk and the mother with 7 kittens was trying to feed them all...so there I was bottle feeding kittens every few hours. I didn't mind, dear little blue-eyed creatures. My house was already set up to cater to cats. I too had moved here with my felines and had lost two to the unfamiliar but curious road...so I embarked on an adventure creating tunnels and posts, cat pods and shelves and a large outdoor wire mesh covered fernery full of flowers and grasses ...and CatNip of course ( the cat's own happy plant)...accessible through tunnel under the floor...just open the hatch and the morning queue would all file out... all in anticipation of...well. a few kittens.....mmmm. I too am an artist,...cats and art seem to go together. I've had a wonderfully enriched life sharing it with my feline friends. My house is as full of curiosities as is this..but not so amazing.. I've been inspired by many an article on HOUZZ for my rennovions but none as much as by this one! My favourite colours are Rose, Burgundy and Yellow and mostly natural timber since my cottage is all natural timber...but each kitty had its own coloured bed. Of course...each cat needs two litter boxes so plenty of these hidden around the place. ...That adventure, it seems, was a youthful, energetic lifetime ago. The old house was somewhat of a general wreck to begin with so it lent itself to whimsy and brightened my solitary days which would have been spent more dismally after having lost literally everybody in the span of three months...(hence the run for the hills with my three Siamese cats and a little stray miniature poodle....and whatever I could cram into my old car.) Crazy Cat Lady? I don't mind the title. Like Cohen.."I love my cats, my house and my art..and I designed it to be beautiful to me". Each birthday my friends give me little gifts of cat things...cat mugs, cat jwellery. cat cards, toys for my cats which of course please me. Who said everybody has to be conventional? Besides, I get as much pleasure from the cat antics as they do from enjoying the house I've mad for....us!

Thank you for the lovely story....we are in process of adding "catwalks". We have rescued (and kept) several beautiful Siamese cats over the past 30 years. Recently rescued a "feral" family: Mommy, Daddy and four kittens. They are doing great...but need additional "walkways". Thank you to the gentlemen that has done so much for cats. Spot in heaven is reserved for him/them. Elizabeth
