An equine veterinarian who recently moved to northern Westchester County, New York, found a home with charming details but a dated primary bathroom. She brought in Curated Nest designers Erin Coren and Lina Galvão, who use Houzz Pro software, to reimagine the space. They layered warm textures, natural materials and thoughtful symmetry to create a striking transformation. A rattan light fixture, spacious white oak vanity, freestanding wood armoire with rattan doors and microcement walls add soft, organic texture, while a checkerboard marble floor brings a timeless touch. With a large soaking tub and a spacious low-curb shower, the result is a refreshed, highly functional retreat that feels elevated yet inviting.

Bathroom at a Glance
Who lives here: An equine veterinarian
Location: North Salem, New York
Size: 170 square feet (16 square meters)
Designers: Erin Coren and Lina Galvão of Curated Nest
Contractor: K&B Creations
Before: The former bathroom offered plenty of square footage and a large picture window with views of the surrounding woods. But a bulky built-in tub, dark, dated finishes, an overload of mirrors and a choppy layout left much to be desired. “We knew from the beginning it was going to be an incredible before-and-after experience,” Coren says.

After: The designers stripped the former space and started from scratch. A freestanding vanity, soaking tub and armoire give the bathroom an airy feel. A rattan light fixture, white oak vanity base and rattan doors on the armoire layer in warmth and texture. “We wanted to create this nice warm symmetry using textures and neutral palettes,” Coren says. Tumbled marble checkerboard flooring adds depth, movement and timeless appeal.
The designers manage their projects with Houzz Pro software. “Within Houzz Pro, building proposals is really easy,” Galvão says. “We love the transparency it provides for our clients. It’s really cool to see how our designs can actually change their lives. It just feels great to know you have that impact on somebody.”

“When it comes to designing for an oversize primary bathroom, it’s really important to have zones,” Coren says. “So we decided instead of having a his-and-her vanity, it made more sense to have an oversize vanity. And we love that this vanity in particular had the trough sink, so it didn’t feel like two separate sink areas. Instead it was just a very nice open and continuous surface space.”
Knurled brass cabinet pulls and the vanity wood grain introduce more layers of texture. “The warm wood details, as well as the mixture of open storage and the closed storage, makes it really functional for our client,” Coren says.
The walls combine creamy white zellige tile with microcement for additional depth. “Microcement in the bathroom is a really incredible product that creates a waterproof membrane,” Coren says. “So instead of having a hard surface that’s just a tile, it allows you to have a lovely soft texture.”
On the left, a spacious low-curb shower features marble penny tile flooring and brass fixtures that coordinate with other warm brass details throughout the room.
Vanity: Vera, 72 inches, Vinnova; wall tile: Gesso Zellige Neo Gesso Square Undulated, Daltile; sconces: Calliope, Visual Comfort

The designers relied on textured natural materials to add warmth, incorporating a waterproof rug, wood stool and the rattan-paneled armoire. “A bathroom has a lot of hard surfaces,” Galvão says. “It does tend to be a more utility-driven space, and it’s important in both bathrooms and kitchens to make them feel a little more livable and homey. So by adding a piece of furniture versus a built-in, it starts feeling more like a bedroom or another space in your home.”

Lovely! Where is the waterproof bath rug you used from?
Micro Cement Textured Walls. Never heard of this. I have a steam shower -- need to look into this for my bathroom walls! What a great video and a beautiful bathroom remodel!!!
Thanks for all the positive feedback! This bathroom was really all about the materials and giving it that natural, relaxing feel, especially given the view out the picture window is pure trees and raw nature! The tumbled marble floors in this bathroom feel so warm and are one of our fave features - they feel great underfoot. Micro cement is an incredible application for any wet space where you want a soft, organic look. You can use it on floors and ceilings too for a seamless look. Someone asked about the rug source - it's from one of our fave rug suppliers - Loloi rugs.
