The Most Incredible Kids' Tree House You'll Ever See?

Steve and Jeri Wakefield had the idea nine years ago to build an elaborate tree house for their grandsons, Lincoln and Sullivan Scott, in their Dallas backyard. They hired architect and family friend James Curvan to craft a whimsical playhouse with steeply pitched gables, multilevel decks and staircases. To keep pace as their grandsons grew, the Wakefields added exciting upgrades, including a climbing wall, rope ladder, suspension bridge and zip line.

“To make a good tree house, you have to think like a kid and take care of the tree,” Curvan says. A series of steel posts, which Curvan painted the color of bark, support the child-size structure, while a giant pecan tree grows through the house but does not bear any weight. With their grandsons all grown up now, the Wakefields invite children from all over the neighborhood to their tree house mansion to play king or queen for a day.

It's fantastic, in the full sense of that word. Now to come out of the treehouse and down to (adult) earth, how does this impact your homeowner's insurance?

At 100 square feet this is the size of many Tiny Houses made for adults to live in. I suppose the furniture is all child-sized but I'd be happy to make do! This is pure art from someone with the soul of a child. Mr. Curvan has a rich interior life to be able to bring all this forth.

I have a couple of reactions; one being that I wish they'd been my grandparents!!

My second reaction is "I wonder what the impact was to their property taxes?"! Considering the size of this structure, and that it has electricity & air conditioning, this is an "auxiliary structure" on the lot, and needs to meet the zoning & construction codes. It would also have an insurance impact on the homeowners, especially if they invite neighborhood children in to use it.

My third reaction is that there's some benefit & satisfaction to children making things themselves, or working with their parents to create a fantasy play space. While this is obviously gorgeous & lots of fun, it's really nothing a growing child can take pride in having created, and there's a loss in that.

To bobby2288 - If you read the article and really looked at the pictures, you would have understood that they made very little impact on the tree. It is not smothered at all. The house is built on steel supports, with just a tethering in a couple of places. I am presuming that you disagree with Disneyland, too, because they also have elaborate tree houses built into the trees.

I am not very astute with tools; however I built a playhouse for my daughter approximately 8' x 8' x 8'. Everything about this house is crooked on purpose. I did not include a tree because none of mine were large enough! Still, I am proud of it and the tea parties we have shared in it.
This little playhouse has windows on all sides, including a round one in the gable! It's difficult to see, but even the chimney stack is crooked. The entire house can be lifted off the floor by six strong men and the structure can be moved. It is not a sophisticated electrical system -- simply an extension cord from the house, but it sure lights up all holiday season as Santa's workshop! My daughter decorated almost every inch of interior space with her drawings she made special for "her house".

Jillybean I LOVE your little club house!

Though it's a lovely, creative, and very fun structure in which I love many of the well thought out details, it's a bit much for kids.

If you're receiving elaborate gifts like this as a child, instead of working "with" your parents and building something, it's got to have some long term negative consequences on your character, don't you think? I don't know, maybe it's just me... and no offense intended, it's just a little over the top for a kids' "tree house."

This article made me think of the hours and hours we spent in our treehouse at Grandmother and Granddad's. A 5'x5' box in the air with a couple of small wooden boxes for a stove and refrigerator and a step ladder from the garage to gain access, we were in heaven. I wish I had a photo but in the 1950's picture taking was for holiday gatherings and family vacations; there were no cell phones to capture everyday play.

I don't know what to say... extremely imaginative probably covers it best. I usually "click" on Houzz articles that are within Texas as I live in Dallas. Sometimes I even try to map them just out of interest... where do the creative people of the world live. The Wakefield's are exactly one mile from me, I think thats a distance record :-) I'd love to photograph this little tree house... so many interesting nooks and crannies. Oh, and thanks for including the link to "Canton's First Monday Trade Days", I've not heard of it, looks like fun. BTW, when kids "grow up" they purchase Mini Coopers... and then visit the playground :-)

There are always a few complainers who instead of looking at this beautiful tree house and taking pleasure in imagining what an awesome space it is for the lucky children, just had to find something to gripe about.

1. These are grandparents doing something for their grandchildren. If it's one statement I've heard over the years growing up it's, 'It's the grandparents job to spoil their grandchildren".

2. It doesn't matter who built it. There are thousands of play things that children enjoy that the parents or grandparents will not or cannot build. Are you saying the kids don't enjoy it any way? I had a swing set growing up. My parents didn't build it. Do you think we as kids cared? All we cared about is how much fun we had on the seesaw, the slides and the swings. What about a pool. Are you saying kids can't appreciate the full pleasure of a pool if they didn't help their parents build it?

3. My little cousin was always taking the sofa cushions and bed linens to make his tent-fort. For Christmas I got him one of those pop up tent things that look like a kids version of a hamster maze. He practically lives in it now. He sleeps in it, Eats in it. Plays hide and seek in it. He didn't care that I didn't build it. Or that we lost quality time because I bought it instead of building it together. What he loves is the play time he gets in it. Whether by himself, or with us, or with the other kids from the neighborhood.

You all need to stop being such a killjoy and look at this through the eyes of a child. There are few things kids love more than having their own miniature space to play in. Get over yourselves and let the kids enjoy themselves.

this is a treehouse built for my 8 year old...built by my boyfriend and i over a year. it has a plexiglass skylight to look up at the fabulous redwood tree. the tree grows up through the corner of it and forms a wall. so it leans against the tree. windows and door and hardware came from a salvage yard and railings from branches of the tree after it was trimmed. it is big enough for three teenage girls (and hopefully never teenage boys!) to sleep in. we are so proud of this project. neither of us knew what we were doing but we bought a couple of books on treehouse building and got to work. the cost was much more than expected...close to $4000 now. but worth it!

Bobby - if you look carefully, the house is not actually in the tree. It's built around the branches, like a high deck, supported by pillars and the lower posts. It's not interfereing with the root system or the branches.

The upper structure - the one the bridge leads to - is resting on adjustable supports bolted to the branches.

This is a very cute project and I appreciate the love a dedication of any person who builds such an intricate structure. That being said, I have to say I'm with astraea on this one. For me the joy of a fort/tree fort was building it myself and learning how to build it myself. I think a lot of my self-motivated research skills, curiosity and appreciation of materials and construction techniques are rooted in these early experiences.

Love this, when I was a kid just to have a platform to sit on in a tree was awesome. One design flaw is the stained glass windown in the loft. I can see two kids roughousing up there and one falls against that window and By BY maybe the deck is there? Getting cut? However the best tree house I have ever seen!

My husband built a two storey tree fort which our children played in until they were 12 and 13! They added their own touches to it over that period of time which made it their own. Congratulations to these Grandparents which have provided an amazing play space and tons of memories for their grandchildren. My kids are now in their 30's and still talk about their memories in their fort and how many changes they made over the years.

No one could write negative comments about the tree house, but we all can question the cost as 40,000,000 Americans live in poverty. Perhaps the owner is a philanthropist who helps the poor children who have no homes, ones in trees or ones on ground.

I've absolutely never seen a tree house like this one. It is really cool. What fabulous grandparents wanting to spoil their greandkids. As grandparents it's their right to do so. I love seeing trees growing through structures, it's so cool. My question is though is the tree finished growing or can it grow and cause damage to the house? How do you monitor that? I would never build something like this even if I could, but I think it's fabulous. I'm in love with the little fireplace..

This certainly is a fantastic tree house, but I'm with mpaines on this one - some of the interior layout struck me as a tad dangerous. A ladder up to a small loft area? What about a kid that wants to jump from the loft to the piano? Anyone else with thoughts on this? I'm a bit curious myself......

Absolutely marvelous! The kids will have great memories! I just love whimsical structures. A lot of love and imagination went into this. If just a little bigger, I would be moving in! I wish adults would lighten up and build more real houses to live in using this kind of imagination. As to the people in poverty, I guess many of you might consider me to live in poverty. But I am still trying to give away a house that must be moved. Any of you complainers want to take on that project? If you would move it for me, i would use it. Or you can move it, fix it up, and give it to the impoverished person of your choice!
The only sad thing about this tree house is that people have to worry about building permits, taxes, and lawsuits. Too bad our society has become so litigious, (is that a word?) that we are afraid to make some magic!

What an AMAZZZING tree house! What love and care has gone into it over the years. Perhaps for the nay-sayers, they don't understand that someone who takes such love and care in building a place for those they love will also be able to teach those children respect so that they will ALSO show love and care when they visit. Children should still be taught that ya know! A lovely, lovely project. I am so blessed to have seen it!!

I think everyone can agree this is a work art, a labor of love, truly a good thing in the world. I can't believe anyone could ruin my "oh my goodness I just found the best treehouse ever" experience, but then I see some comments regarding taxes, building codes, electrical costs and last but not least the one that beats them all, "why involve a tree?" Why involve a tree?..........hello...... it's a treehouse! This grandfather created a beautiful place to dream and play the treehouse makes the world a better place and has created many smiles. So for all the Debbie Downers of the world come out and play with all of us who are still young at heart. No matter how small the difference is, this treehouse makes the world a better place. Good job grandpa!,

I just wish I could have had grandfathers that were around when I was growing up. One died 8 years before I was born, and the other I only met a couple of times before he died in 1975. I wonder about what it would have been like to have them in my life. I did have my grandmothers for a little while, but not nearly long enough. So, when I read about grandparents doing nice things for their grandkids, it makes me happy.

Wow!! I don't know which is worse, complaining they didn't build the treehouse themselves or complaining about how much they spent to build it. rongregory, it's their money. It's their grandkids. Maybe every time you buy anything for yourself, you give an equal amount to charity. If so, good for you. But shame on you for trying to make people feel guilty for wanting to do something special for their own grandchildren with money from their own pockets. It isn't yours or anyone else's business to dictate how anyone should spend their own money. Where is the line that would make you happy? They have a house, maybe they should give it up because how dare they have a house when so many don't. And how dare they not sell their cars and give the proceeds of that to someone else. Seriously, it's a treehouse, a gift for their grandchildren. I am amazed anyone could look at something this fantastical and memory-creating and think anything but "AWWW".

I'm only 5'2" so I think I'd fit! Truly amazing. I can only imagine how popular those grandchildren were with their friends! Growing up we had a tiny shed which we converted into a den and had so much fun in it. This treehouse must have made so many precious memories for the children who have been lucky enough to play in it - would the complainers prefer they stay inside playing video games? Truly magical, it's put a smile on my face. Thank you for sharing.

I have always loved houses with a lot of architectural detail, and when I saw this, my heart soared! Lots of nooks and crannies, porches, lofts, whimsical details, I love it! For all you naysayers, go get a life or pick on someone else. This was a labor of love and what child wouldn't be thrilled!

The grandkids will never want to leave grandma's house. If I were their parents I wouldn't want to leave grandma's house either. I think it's even more special that it was the grandparents and not the parents who did this. You guys are awesome. Please ignore the negative nellies. I think it's wonderful you created this magical place for them. They will remember it always.

This is really fun. Here is a pictures of a cool tree house I found a while ago on houzz. More of a manchild tree house but very cool details. I think this one in Dallas has more imagination. What a great memory for the kids and the grandparents as well. You can't take the money with you, why not have some fun and help an architect and contractors flex their creative muscles too.

When I was a kid I put two boards in a weeping willow tree to make a platform. Instead of a ladder or climbing rope, I climbed branches of the tree. My zipline was a flexible branch I could hang onto to bring me to the ground. Creativity, resourcefulness, and imagination went into that tree house I had. a sense of accomplishment in seeing a project from start to finish.Don't feel bad if your children or grandchildren can't have the luxury model.

Built this for my kids, imported the log from a construction site. Secured it to a 5'x5' concrete slab. House is approximately 60sq ft and the deck is slightly larger at 75. Tire swim is an old NASCAR tire hung from the monkey bars.

Sheila. I am still smiling from seeing the Wakefield's house, and now I am here...but first I made a stop at www.james curvan.com to marvel at his architectural models, and pretend I was a kid again in the playhouses featured on his site. Funny, I guess I was in art school at UT Austin just before James in Architecture School / Interior Design/ Stage Design. I thank Sarah, again. For some reason, "Peewee's great Adventure is going through my head! All should venture on to his website!!! He also has old photos from his schooling in the 70's, so I am dating myself.

When I was little I used to have a "tree house" when we lived in Ohio, it had an enclosed 1st story with a door that locked and stairs to an open 2nd story cupola with rails and a roof. I never liked ladders, so it had a staircase with hand rails. It also had 2 slides, one for me, and one for our 2 dogs. When I moved to South Carolina a new one was built, it was free standing with trees around it. At its best it had a fireplace, a telescope, a rotating attic ventilation fan, a real wood burning fireplace, a grist mill type waterwheel, and flume to delivery water to the wheel. The rear where the fireplace was was covered and had walls, with an open front porch with a ladder and slide. It has 2 swings. There is a bottom level, a once enclosed cellar. Over the years slowly things have been removed, the wood burning fireplace now sits on my parents patio. This one has only a ladder and ladders have always bothered my back, so I don't go in it any more. The mill flume was removed with the wheel and now sits inside the covered rear. The walls were removed on the rear enclosed part making the porch and it open, so just one big open space.

Here is a more recent picture. It has a matching fence, it used to have a system of belts and pulleys to hoist up items. It has been neglected for a while now, so please pardon the poor condition and picture through the large windows. I wish I had a picture from it height, it's heyday. A little waterfall flows behind it too, down a rock creek to a pond with a fountain and once a miniature grist mill and waterwheel, all on my parents property.

Any tree house, small, made of found boards or very large and elaborate like this one is such a joy for children and adult-children alike. Like someone else said, you earned your money and you should be able to spend it any way you want. It is true that there are unfortunate ones out there and I hope we all help in our own way. But that is your business not anyone other than you. The tree house is a beautiful and wanderous thing. Thank you for sharing and thank you for being the kind of grandparents we would all like to have (not for the money but for the love). I am sure that if you were at poverty level you would still find ways to spoil and make your grandchildren laugh and play. Thank you again for being you!!!

My thoughts were originally posted on a question asked by a reader, but I realized that I should probably post it here as well. Here goes...

amoderngloThis treehouse could be titled the giving tree. The owners and builder are some of the nicest, most generous people you will ever meet. I am one of their lucky people whose world is brighter because this magical place is not just for the grandkids, it is for a large circle of extended friends and family, old or young, healthy or disabled. This wonderland was built in stages, using lots of recycled materials and with the utmost concern for the safety of the children. James Curvan built a smaller playhouse for my kids, and almost every board used came from the side of the road or the discount culled wood bin at Home Depot. Even though I had just met Jeri Wakefield, she would show up weekly at my house with some great item she found at a thrift store, that would brighten our playhouse. Yes, this treehouse is large...large because the owners and builder have large hearts and just want to keep adding more magic for all who enter.
You can read about the playhouse James built for us on my blog...

What a masterpiece! It probably cost more than my house and is nothing short of a work of art. My husband, who himself is very talented at building things, watched the video and viewed the detail in the photographs with me. We are simply amazed at the entire project. Congrats to the family and to the architect.
