This project involved the conversion of a bedroom into a modern day boudoir inclusive of make up area, changing area and clothing storage. Designing a system of layering with a series of mechanisms which slowly either adds or subtracts space and program creates “built in environments” catalogues the program, while distributing and articulating the layers across the surfaces of the space.

Compartmentalization of program responds to the client’s request for the storage of different items of clothing, each with their own specific requirements (size, shape, method of storage). The overall design is inspired by the size and shapes of business suits, shirts on hangars, pants, and hat boxes.

As each individual compartment is a storage space, so too is the room, which itself has an adjoining walk-in closet. This space was converted into a shoe room lined with angled shelves to display the shoes. The entrance into the walk-in was incorporated into the overall closet system, providing a layer of depth, further thickening the layers by providing a moment where one can actually pass through the closet into another space.

A system of sliding translucent panels runs over the thickened surface, providing a system of variation against the rhythm of openings. These panels simultaneously obscure and reveal the clothing items as they are stored in the closet.
