A Wayland midcentury refuge
There are projects where you work with what exists. And then there are the rare ones where you get to start from nothing — where every wall, every material, every detail is yours to shape from the very first line on paper.
This was that project.
Built from the ground up on protected conservation land in Wayland, Massachusetts, this new construction gave us something extraordinary: the freedom to design an entire home in complete dialogue with its landscape. No compromises, no constraints — just a blank canvas and a piece of New England woodland that quietly set the brief.
The guiding principle was simple. The boundary between inside and outside should dissolve. Every finish, every color, every texture was chosen in direct response to what lay beyond the windows: the deep green of the forest canopy, the mineral tones of the river running alongside the property, the honey warmth of birch bark in late afternoon sun, the lichen on old stone walls. Nature didn't inspire this home — it designed it.
That intention runs through every room. The kitchen wraps the landscape in warm white oak, forest-green herringbone tile, and hand-blown amber pendants. The primary bathroom pairs textured stone tile and fluted wood detailing with a walk-in rain shower that opens to views of bare winter trees. A powder room becomes a destination — wrapped entirely in a sweeping landscape wallpaper that makes the room feel like stepping outside. Even the children's spaces carry the palette, with floor-to-ceiling custom built-ins in deep forest green that bring the woodland indoors one last time.
From the soaring cathedral ceiling and exposed oak beams of the great room, to the penny tile floors and walnut vanities of the bathrooms, to the sage green banquette that frames the conservation land like a living painting — every single detail of this home was chosen by DFI Interiors. Every last one.
Design by Dominique, DFI Interiors — a Boston-based luxury residential studio specializing in new construction and full-home design for homes of $2M and above, with a European white-glove approach to every project.
