Trussville Garage Gallery

As avid automotive enthusiasts, these homeowners were committed to growing their car collection. Unfortunately, they eventually outgrew their space. After years of storing cars and parts in the basement, there was nowhere else to go. They knew what was needed. The only question was where and how to build so it met the homeowner’s association guidelines and city zoning ordinances.

A two-story, four car garage off the right rear corner of the existing house was planned. The second story of the garage tied into the screened porch of the house, incorporating another of the homeowner's remodeling goals - the rebuilding of the rear porch and deck areas.

New stairs leading from the deck allowed access to the lower portion of the garage while the upstairs storage area was accessed from a screened breezeway. Working within the guidelines of the homeowner’s association, vehicle access to the garage was created by continuing the existing rear driveway along the back of the house - maintaining privacy and creating a clean look in the process.

Inside, construction kept automotive servicing in mind just as the homeowners intended. Poured concrete walls with multiple electrical outlets are set at workbench height. Outside, a two-car carport - extending from the middle of the garage and well-lit with both recessed and flood fixtures - provides
an additional exterior work area when desired. Upstairs, large rafters are used to maximize the space by eliminating the need for bracing and knee walls.

The result of this project is a dedicated, two-story, four car garage, beautifully landscaped and easy to access which speaks to the homeowners' passion for their collection. They were able to reclaim portions of their home that had been given over to the hobby and also had ample new space to address non-hobby related storage needs. Using innovative design and creative problem solving, the builder was able to address all the goals within the available space. What was created is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, with new construction blending seamlessly into existing.
