WALNUT HILL HOUSE
WALNUT HILL HOUSE IS THE story of a one story Victorian house built in Historic Downtown Columbia in 1908. In 1940 a family moved the home to a scenic hill on their farm located 10 miles away in Maury County.
By 2010 when the new owners purchased the farmland, the house on the hill had traded hands 3 or 4 times and been added to over the years. By the time we saw the house, it had 7’ ceilings throughout, 3 bedrooms, wall to wall carpeting, a tired kitchen from the 50’s, and 1 bathroom that contained the washer and dryer and water heater. We advised a complete restoration of the original structure and an interior gutting of all the additions. We gutted it to the studs and the rafters.
We drew many plans and options for the 1,900 ft. space, sure it had never realized its potential. The end result is a 3 bedroom home with 10 ft ceilings and two full bathrooms. A new open plan kitchen with a wood burning stove that opens up to the large living and dining room. The new space has an open vaulted ceiling over 12’ high and a loft overlooking the Great room. Under the layers of carpet and padding and pressboard, perfect heart pine wood floors had been preserved over all the years. When we removed the dropped ceiling, years of dust and insulation were removed.
The house had lived most of its life on top of a hill with spectacular vistas but had few windows. We opened it up to light and air with floor to ceiling windows. We put a spacious deck on the back with sunset views. The open plan living area makes it perfect for large gatherings and parties.
