A rugged oak woodland near the Maine coast provided a dramatic setting for a shaded backyard patio and fir-pit area. Locally-sourced stone was used for the stonewalls and steps and all of the hardscape was hand-built, without mortar. Planting bed layouts were made and the new plantings were started by late fall.
