modern style is "clean", uncluttered so I would recommend forgetting the center piece for the island. Use black, gray, white, red for accent pieces. You might add a metal garden sculpture at the end of long cabinet. I see room for a large colorful whimsical artwork on that wall. Maybe herb plants under the cabinet lights?
