poorgirl, how many lamps is enough is determined by two factors: 1) when you have enough light for tasks in all the spaces you do them (IE, can you read a book in every seat) and 2) when it feels comfortable to you, including seeing the faces of any others in the room. If 4000K is too high at night, try stepping down to 3500 next. It is less common than 3000K, but often is perceived as a nice neutral white.

poorgirl - go to a lighting/electrical supply house (for things like bulbs they are often much less expensive then big box) - that is not a designer lighting showroom (but they might have one too) - get a spread of bulb temps and try them. I do this when I want to check temp/quality as well as beam spread, reflector or particular bulb shape in a fixture.
