@edgreno, you should paint the sides the same color as the trim of the house. For my own home for example, the front is red, the back is neutral and the sides are white the rest of the house trim. I hope that is helpful.

ebgreno: the standard for the sides is for them to be painted the colour of the most visible side when open, so the hinge side of an in swing door would be painted the outdoor colour, the latch side the indoor colour. With an outswing door, the hinge side would be painted the indoor colour and the latch side the outdoor colour.

I love interesting colors on doors, ones that say WELCOME! My house is interesting, not a boreing token of fear and sameness! If there is any glass around the door, it is important to keep the color congourous with the entry hall as that will show through at night when the lights are on! In my last house I had a shocking fuscia entry hall with very deep complicated white cove moldings. That surprise of color really made you notice the lovely white cove moldings plus it was a great transition to the colors in the adjoining diningroom and living rooms. People were of course surprized when they stepped inside then realized how such a bright color worked so well with the rest of the decor. My realestate agent (making it easy for himself and lacking in decorating talent) changed it all to the grey on the other walls. How ho-hum! He even repainted the door to match the black shutters...how unique was that! I had painted the door a kind of maroonish color that did not clash with the 'chicago brick' exterior at all but worked as a darker shade of the bright interior. The shutters were fine in black. I am an artist so color is very important for me and 'getting it right' even moreso.
