Powder rooms allow for a surprising amount of creative flexibility, particularly when it comes to the blank-canvas possibilities of the walls. In considering some of Houzz users’ most-saved photos over the past three months, the wide array of wall treatments — from clean white tile to swirling metallic wallpaper — shows just how much punch the little bathrooms can pack inside their small spaces. Here are a few popular picks, ranked from understated to eye-popping.

11. Clean and classic. Bright white walls (Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore) paired with a classic blue vanity (Gentleman’s Gray by Benjamin Moore) and gold fixtures get some added visual contrast with stacked white tiles. “We stacked the tile instead of going with the staggered brick pattern because the space with the vanity is very tight, so going with a stacked design on the tile gave it a more open look,” Aaron Popowsky of New York’s Gallery Kitchen & Bath says.

10. Farmhouse feel. Users’ most-saved recent powder room photo features white walls elevated with horizontal shiplap that frames a rustic wood vanity and vessel sink.
9. Mosaic makeover. The existing curved arch of this Arizona powder room set the tone for a multilayered, texture-rich design. The team at Red Egg Design Group played off the feature with Carrara marble arabesque mosaic wall tiles to highlight the vanity area. A concrete sink topped with gray quartz and brass fixtures pops against the white tile.

8. Dark horse. What could have been a typical farmhouse bath takes a moodier turn here thanks to the deep shiplap on the walls (Poppy Seed in Velvet finish by Behr). Two Hawks Design and Development rounded out the more modern take on rustic with a round-edged porcelain vessel sink, distressed hardware and a complementary gray-washed vanity table and mirror.
7. Pretty in paper. The Candice Olson wallpaper in this Memphis, Tennessee, powder room served as inspiration for Lindsey Black Interiors. “I selected the wallpaper first and then built the rest of the design details around it,” Lindsey Black says.
The custom-designed cabinet, built by a local cabinetmaker and painted in Benjamin Moore’s Stratton Blue, was left open at the base of its tapered legs to reveal the marble hexagon tile underneath.

6. Knock on wood. In a room full of conversation pieces, this charcoal faux bois wallpaper provides a neutral, natural foundation. Designer Benjamin Dhong of Benjamin Dhong Interiors had a marble top cut for the branching console table he’d found and painted white to create the vanity.
The vessel bowl placed on top of that was meant to emulate ancient architectural forms, Dhong says, with the French antique trumeau mirror on the wall chosen as a way to mix softness and strength.
“I wanted just a huge big wow moment with a lot of drama,” Dhong says.

5. Taking flight. Attention-grabbing wallpaper on the ceiling that acts as an extension of the dark, bold walls makes this desert modern design stand out. NB Design Group used Trove’s black-and-white Indi print paper, crowded with flocking bird silhouettes, as a pop of interest. A matching bird accent on the vanity completes the look.

4. In black and white. A contemporary black-and-white powder room in Toronto is all the more striking with the subtle hexagon pattern and texture of the tile. Clean lines and a narrow sink let the statement wall shine.
3. Gilded geometrics. The gold Hicks Hexagon wallpaper by Cole & Son in this Chicago home ties together the custom vanity with the gold geometric sconces.
2. Bold banana. Banana leaf prints such as Photowall’s Botany Banana wallpaper seen here have seen a decorative resurgence in recent years. By offsetting the playful pattern with stark white subway tile, Sweden’s Moodhouse Interiör strikes a balance of fun form and function.

1. Mix and metallic match. Mixed metals meet mixed wall and floor patterns in this 1911 San Francisco house’s updated powder room. Traditional wood wainscoting, painted blue, grounds the whimsical, geode-like wall treatment above it.
