As you said, you have a lot of wood in your living area, and I’m going to assume you like that and aren’t planning to change the fireplace or beams, which is why you’re having trouble deciding?
Since the rooms are connected, I think you need wood cabinets to relate to the wood in the living room. Slab doors in natural cherry have the right level of warmth to work with the floors their current color, or walnut if you’re planning to refinish. With a single open wall of cabinets, white walls and backsplash, and good lighting, you can avoid dark and closed in. Lots of beatiful natural cherry kitchens showing up. Cheryl Hewitt has one here on Houzz (shaker style doors) and here are some nice modern examples.
For a furniture look, you might consider ikea boxes with custom slab doors from someplace like semihandmadedoors.com or scherrs , along with legs of your choice
