@fupge2013: Forget vinyl flooring if you are concerned about the toxicity. Same thing with glues and memory foam mattresses. Others include some carpet and even furniture. Best to look at tile like cement, porcelain, glass and ceramic - but read labels about the glues used. And yes, there are glues that are non-toxic. If you want carpet, best is to look at totally natural materials and stay away from those that have plastics in them.

Other bets are pre-finished hardwood rather than original wood or salvaged wood; n natural linoleum, terrazzo. If you get into engineered woods, it'll depend on your sensitivity - same with hard vinyl (Luxe vinyl). And btw, may hardwood stains can be very toxic.

So, do your own research and check those products you are interested in

@janabanana - we hated the look of acoustic tiles, so we decided to gamble that we’d rarely need access and we drywalled the ceiling. Of course we took careful photos before we closed it up. So far (15 yrs later) we’ve never needed to cut it.

I agree with @tajphil about water concerns. We’ve had more than one “100 year floods” in recent years. Be sure to specifically ask your insurance agent if each of these events are covered.

Living in Chicago, we carpeted the basement floor for the comfort factor. Plus leveling the floor for tile in a 100 year old house wouldn’t be worth it.
