We have a 75 lb dog and a cat. We bought a leather sofa because the fur wipes right off; we read that cats don't usually scratch it; and the sales person assured us that our dog wouldn't damage the leather. She was correct - the dog hasn't hurt it a bit. The problem is the cat. He doesn't scratch it on purpose, but when he's playing, he launches himself off of the sofa and his back claws scratch it. We tried protective covers, but hated the look, plus the fur became a problem again. So now, we put shoe polish on the scratches every once in a while. It helps, but they are still visible.

I’m short too, but unlike everyone else here, I don’t sit on my sofa. That’s to say, I sprawl all over it with my husband, kids, and dogs. I lie flat, or throw my legs over the arms. My back pain is bad enough (damaged spine) that I can’t sit for long periods of time. Our sofa is a grey beige to hide pet hair, and scotch guarded to wipe up kid slobber. Every adult who visits our home sits on our tiny child sized former classroom chairs!? But, if they dare to sit on our sofa, then tend to end up napping. I’m guessing that our sofa passes the comfort test!

I've had several sofas over the years that I bought with great hopes, and most of them turned out to be direly uncomfortable and/or fall apart immediately. In our living room we have two now. A leather sofa from IKEA that was too low for our tall bodies, but once we put taller legs on it (they sell these online!) is a perfect height.; and a sleep sofa which is our main place to watch TV. It is quite comfortable, but it's three years old and I've already gone into the seat cushions to add more stuffing. Pay extra for the overstuffed cushions, because they will mash down a lot. Also, I would never consider buying a sofa or upholstered chair online. Comfotr is much too important.
