Wallpaper is enjoying a resurgence, and it’s arguably better than ever. Homeowners want versatile, family-friendly options that suit their busy lifestyles, and the design industry is paying attention. There are more colors, textures and patterns available, with a newfound focus on cleanability and durability. Read on to see how technology is changing the wallpaper game for good.
The Inspiration
Hard-wearing polyvinyl film technology has been used across industries for years, and it was only natural that the material would find its way into the world of home design. “The technology has been used in many applications, including aircraft interiors, automotive parts, rail interiors, solar panels, sports domes and arenas,” says Ethan Simon, chief technology officer of photovoltaic and advanced materials at DuPont.
First used as a protective wallcovering film in commercial interiors, it’s now available in colors and patterns for home use, as seen in the living room here. “The wallpaper has an extremely durable protective coating that naturally resists household stains and marks, making it perfect for every area in your home, including high-traffic areas,” Simon says.

The New Features
You might have experienced the horror of crayon or lipstick scrawled across your once-perfect wallpaper. This used to mean an unsalvageable mess, but these days wallpaper can be surprisingly stain- (and budding-artist) resistant. Polyvinyl-film versions, even in pale colors as seen here, can handle most common sources of stains. The family-friendly material is immune to red wine, ballpoint pens, ketchup and, of course, crayons and lipstick. “It provides an impervious barrier against stains and can stand up to industrial cleaning products,” Simon says.
The sturdy material also resists scratches and abrasions, no matter how boisterous your family and pets might be. “It also resists and repels water, making it an ideal choice for environments where moisture is a concern,” Simon adds. It won’t peel off your walls if it gets wet or shred during an aggressive scrubbing. Though scrubbable paint has been on the market for years, it doesn’t offer the patterns or stain resistance that high-tech wallpaper does, Simon says.

What It Means for Design
These innovations have opened the door to more design freedom. Once restricted to low-traffic areas where staining potential and moisture were minimal, wallpaper now can be used throughout your home. Decorate your dining area with a contemporary geometric design, as seen here, able to stand up to errant marinara sauce. Spice up your kitchen backsplash with bold stripes, or reinvigorate your bathrooms with vintage prints — no need to limit wallpaper to low-moisture powder rooms.

Since adventurous artists (and sticky fingers) are no longer a problem, bring wallpaper into your kids’ bedrooms too. For example, this whimsical circus-themed space features a colorful striped wallcovering. If your little ones decide to play Picasso, you can easily wipe up their creations. Consider polyvinyl-film wallpaper for high-traffic areas such as hallways, mudrooms, basements, garages and laundry rooms as well. “It’s easy to DIY,” Simon says. “It’s installed the same way as typical wallpaper, and it’s actually slightly stiffer, so hanging is even easier.”
How to Keep High-Tech Wallpaper Clean
Simon divides cleaning the wallpaper into two categories: wet cloth only and household detergent. If coffee was spilled on this nautical-themed wallpaper, for example, it could be wiped up with a wet cloth or a foam cleaning eraser. The same goes for ballpoint pen and your favorite cabernet. Remove lipstick, ketchup and black crayon with a warm, full-strength solution of household detergent and then rinse with water. “In most cases, stains can be removed without a trace,” Simon says. “Cleaners should be applied generously with a soft cloth and very light pressure.”

Thanx very much for that! I wouldn't have thought of using crown molding, but I think that would be the (wait for it) crowning touch, lol. In truth, giving the dark rich charcoal gray that bit of definition should really add polish. :-)
Hello Sallie - Unfortunately it is not pre-pasted but it is not that difficult. You would purchase paste/glue from the local hardware store. You just have to follow the directions from the paste/glue manufacture.
