try a diff stain. you aren't supposed to apply more than one coat. I like varathane over minwax. General Finishes is even better.
love the imperfect mix / Homeowner requested a light, airy and modern look, a challenge if we were to keep the heavy cedar walls, designer Kimball Starr says…large glass lights are focal design point, allowing sunlight through them so they don’t overwhelm. Cedar wall is 6” thick, so you can’t run power through it, but code required us to have receptacle outlets on that wall. The electrician wanted to mount the receptacle box on top of the wall with exposed conduit pipe. Instead, I came up with a solution where we boxed out the quartz backsplash to run the conduit inside and the receptacle plugs sat flush with the top of the quartz ‘box.’
how about with concrete, soapstone, natural colors

The finishing and veneering is eliminated saving time and money.

“Kitchen is 8' wide, counter 2' deep, and pantry to the left is 2' deep. The floor space between is 4' wide. Standard-depth fridge [36”] is in the pantry wall. A counter-depth refrigerator would be ideal, but standard depth should be fine. I would recommend a model with french doors, so you can get around them when they are open.”

Tip: Before drilling any holes, make sure the cabinet hardware suits the proportions of the door or drawer. “The builder did the greatest thing — he made mockups of the hardware pulls from wood,” Catlin says. “These cabinets have pulls in a lot of different sizes, and this helped us make sure we were getting the proportions right for every door and drawer.”
Not necessary to replace your granite in order to get a larger peninsula. We routinely SUPPLEMENT a granite/quartz island/peninsula with a butcher block wood countertop --usually there is a difference in height between the two. Clients like wood on overhangs where people might be eating or conversing with the cook; it’s softer and warmer than the granite. With food-safe oiled finish it creates a user-friendly top. From the floor to the top of counter and wood table top is 36", standard height. The wood top is set just a little lower--not more than an inch--below the granite countertop that surrounds the cooktop. Standard table top height in usually about 30" off the floor, but these clients wanted the wood top to be higher and come close to matching the granite so it could be used for additional prep space, serving space or eating. Granite about 4' x 8'. The walnut part of the counter top is about the same size, though it is notched around the granite [and 8’ long]. There is about 42" of space between the island and the perimeter cabinets on all sides--wide enough for two people to pass and not bump into each other. The overhang for the walnut counter top is 16”. You can tell...

“I love to mix countertops,” Koltun says / island quartz, solid gray for perimeter countertops to add contrast. Matte black finishes on the faucet, light fixtures and stools add contrast and play off the dark-colored cabinets on the right. Brushed brass hardware. “I generally like to use two different metal finishes, three at the most,” she says. “The warm brass keeps the room from feeling too stark.” Dark cabinet good end point for backsplash. “I don’t like it when a backsplash just ends at some drywall,” she says. “And this piece has a freestanding furniture look.” The charcoal color provides strong contrast and plays off the other dark elements like the light fixtures, faucet and counter stool bases.

Removed the wall / navy blue cabinets set apart the area for baking, with a deep, bright counter for cooling racks, a tiled niche for the mixer, and pantries dedicated to baking supplies. The peninsula that faces the dining room provides a convenient spot for guests to gather and for the homeowners to set up a bar and serve food.
INSET doors and drawers reveal the rest of the plywood cabinet framing. Typically, overlay doors and drawers would extend over the framing to cover it. “This shows that the cabinets are basically boxes within boxes,” Mond says. The framing also shows off the PRESSED COMPOSITION OF THE PLYWOOD. More deep plywood boxes on the wall match those on the other side of the room. On this side of the kitchen, they opted to use a simple 4-inch backsplash in coordinating granite. “We wanted to put the focus on the blue range wall,” Mond says. “We didn’t want this side of the kitchen to take away attention from that.”
1’D plywood boxes- the design philosophy of revealing materials and how things were crafted. Owners: “Let’s be proud that we are using plywood.” Mond: “Rather than covering the cabinet frames, where the pressed sheets that make up a piece of plywood show, we revealed them. We used a high-grade Baltic birch plywood so that it wouldn’t have the gaps that lesser-quality plywood has. Usually the cabinet frame would be hidden by a built-up counter edge, but we didn’t do that. The true thickness of the slab shows.” Honed finish granite.
The peninsula toward the back of the kitchen provides prep space and makes it easy to set down food from the fridge and pantry in a spot that’s convenient to the range and sink. The peninsula in the foreground serves the dining room.
