Bedroom Style: A Guide to Upholstered Headboards
There have never been as many varieties of upholstered headboards available as there are today. Even more fun than that, it’s very easy to have one custom made to your every whim. For those who are more industrious and D.I.Y. talented, I’m told it’s not very hard to make your own (search “How to Make an Upholstered Headboard” and a slew of guides appear).
Upholstered headboards vary so much in style - some give a tailored masculine look, some are stark and modern, some add Regency glamor, and others are completely over the top (I’m thinking of some insane hot pink and cheetah thing that Bobby Trendy came up with for Anna Nicole Smith…Too soon?).
Some factors to consider when designing an upholstered headboard:
-Shape
-Size
-Will it attach to your bedframe or be mounted on your wall?
-Upholstery nails - This little detail can make a big difference! Do you show them off in a pattern or hide them? Metal Color Selection, Shape and Size Selection
-Whether to add pattern with stitches and buttons
-Fabric Selection: Color, Weight, Print vs. Plain
-Height and Width (you may go wider than the length of your bed, and you may choose to go very high).
-Headboard Border - Upholstered Edge or a Frame?
Also, if the thought of making all of these decisions is overwhelming and you just want to get on with it already, there are plenty of beautiful, ready-to-deliver upholstered headboards just waiting for you to buy them. Here’s a selection of some of my favorites from houzz; if any of them float your boat, bring your laptop to the upholsterer and show him/her what you like!

This headboard has such a lovely, intricate shape. It's so unexpected that this style would be upholstered and not just plain wood. Actually, now that I look at it really closely, I can't even tell if it is upholstered or wood, but I'm going to pretend I'm confident that it's upholstered.
