I've used a selected a color for the room based on a particular piece of artwork. A wall color can either dul the art or make it pop!

Use a color professional, best $100 I ever spent! I have a signed and dated (1929) painting over my living room fireplace and for the last 40 years I have disliked it but would never paint over it, so I suffered. When I found a colorist she new exactly what color to paint the room to make the picture look good! Everybody's happy now.
