poured concrete slab with quarter-inch joints (the thinner lines you can see on the surface of most of the concrete), lightly washed sand finish (lightly washed and swept with a broom to expose the sand). The day after concrete patio was poured, Corbett used a handheld grinder and a diamond blade to create the design you see in the foreground. He cut along surface joints, then removed the top 3 inches of concrete along those cuts, leaving the bottom 3 inches intact. The concrete is still one solid slab, with the pebbles covering where the concrete connects.
James Hardie Artisan / Stucco is more expensive than stucco board, an alternative with Tudor, having trim board over the seams. Cement panels are a different look, contemporary, and will have seams or gaps - more expensive since you have to have WELL-PLACED DRAINAGE PLANE BEHIND FINISHED PRODUCT. Portland-based stucco systems across the spectrum of styles; installed correctly, will last the longest and be low maintenance.
Gardner Architects: The "gray" siding is STK (select tight knot), cedar, random widths and lengths, with a ¾" x 1-½" batten. It is the house original siding (circa 1969). We removed it, cleaned it up, applied a semi-transparent stain, and properly reinstalled it over a drainage plane. The horizontal siding is indeed ipe, finished with Penofin Hardwood formula.
WA Design Architects: it's corrugated Galvalum metal siding in a slightly warmer color than the standard silver. Mahoney Architects - Great composition and love the contrast of siding textures. Can you tell me what gauge corrugated galvalum was used? WA Design Architects: The siding was the typical gauge for exterior use - I'm fairly sure that's 24 gauge, the same as the Kynar roofing material. -Siding Swiss Pearl
