Houzz Tour: Clean, Colorful and Collected in Denmark
Josina Bergsøe uses color and quirky product to create a cozy home for her family of 5
This colorful Danish cabin is set just outside of a big forest in a village near Copenhagen. Josina Bergsøe lives in this 2,150 square foot home with her husband and three children. While the couple stuck to a traditional all-white palette for the walls and flooring, Bergsøe dressed up the space with bold and bright accents, art and textiles. Large windows fill every room with natural light and views of the surrounding forest.

"I just love colors, and I also like to change the mood in the house once in a while," Bergsøe says. "When the walls are white, it's far easier and cheaper to change the mood using small things like flowers, pillows, trays, flowerpots and carpets."

This large great room has enough room for two seating areas as well as a work area for Bergsøe and her husband. This nook at the end of the space takes advantage of the room's slanted ceilings by creating a cozy reading spot with built-in shelving. Skylights open the space to the forested view.

The soft natural light bounces off the walls and ceiling, playing with the colorful mobile above the desks.

This cozy living room fireplace neatly tucks into a small corner space. The clean and simple design frames the fire like a piece of art.
Bergsøe's favorite artist is Karin Olesen, who created the unique and colorful mobiles throughout the house. The rest of the art in her home was found at antique shops, flea markets, or was handed down from her parents and grandparents.

An open kitchen and dining room sits in the bottom floor, with the dining room opening up to the garden. The décor in this room is less colorful than in the living room, but it's just as eclectic — a blend of travel finds, antiques and a few new purchases. "When I'm traveling I always buy something, mostly in Asia," says Bergsøe. "I also like flea markets in Denmark where I can find old things that have a history."

Like the rest of the house, the kitchen remains light, bright and open to the view of the garden. Quirky Bombo bar chairs add a more modern element to the kitchen space. Under-counter cabinetry keeps the space feeling open, while a few colorful accessories and a modern pendant tie the room to the rest of the home's style.

While the slanted ceilings in each bedroom might seem like the makings of a design dilemma, Bergsøe's room and furniture arrangement actually embraces these comforting angles. Tucking the bed frame into a corner in this master bedroom makes the space feel cozy, while large windows keep it from feeling too confined.

After remodeling the house, Bergsøe recruited a local landscape architect to redesign the garden. The goal was to create a beautiful and relaxing space that was also easy to maintain. Tulips, roses, lavender, foxgloves and forest flowers were planted along a long pathway. All of the original trees were kept. "This helps make my garden feel unique and undisturbed," Bergsøe says.
After 11 years of living in this house, Bergsøe has transformed it into the perfect home for her and her family. "I wouldn't change a thing," she says.
