ddelora: I, too, have a mid-70's home and want to add trim around the windows, as well as change out the baseboards. Did you use the plain boards? My house is about 2300 sq. ft and the scale is definitely too small to use those really wide boards (mostly 8' ceilings, except the slightly vaulted living room). I don't know what to use!
I also have the hollow-core, plain, flat doors. I would like to replace those as well; I just don't want them to look silly in my obviously 70's house that leans (just a little, though) toward Spanish styling.

Great article on an under-appreciated topic.. Like many, we are trying to tread a delicate line between traditional and modern as we plan a massive remodel. It is amazing to me how much window & trim selection affect the overall feel of the house. I had the same response as you did to the second picture above, before reading your commentary. After reading your commentary, it made me feel like the time I've invested in "figuring out" windows & trim have actually taught me something! Thank you.

This article should be called "how to make any house look modern with flat stock trim". No depth of reporting whatsoever.
