Modern farmhouse: apron sink, Shakers, shelves, items, paneling; with MODERN elements: s.steel, quartz counters, clean-lined faucet. Edit more rustic elements to a handful (some vintage objects, reclaimed wood shelves). Balance with smooth and polished finishes is a good way to get a modern farmhouse look.
Details matter - edges, drips, flashings, etc. sound boring, but if not considered, they look heavy, clunky and like a strip mall rather than an elegant house.
“JH fiber cement panels, installed correctly, and painted, last long, since SIDING MATERIAL [beneath paint] is not subject to the movement, water intrusion and other factors that causes failure of PAINT ON OTHER SURFACES LIKE WOOD… joints are covered with batten strips/ more placed in between [2-1/2"W and 3/4"D]- bb spaced 16+" to align with the studs…not pre-painted, and the edges to be a bit too rough. However, siding was painted in the field, smoothed it a bit -rustic look like rough sawn wood. If we did it again, we'd think more, also install siding in a rain-screen application with an air gap between it and the water resistive barrier.”
“the change of texture differentiates entrance from porch. Carving a porch into the house rather than having it placed onto the house is a mannered version of a classic farmhouse element. It’s a modern maneuver to continue to blur the distinction.”

3 steep gable rooflines linked together by a central spine. This unique design evokes a sense of expansion and contraction from one space to the next. Vertical cedar siding, poured concrete, and zinc gray metal elements clad the modern farmhouse, which, combined with a shop that has the aesthetic of a weathered barn, creates a sense of modernity that remains rooted to the surrounding environment.
