Reply to: First off, all of your furniture is absolutely gorgeous! When it comes to furniture placement rules, don’t be afraid of windows. As long as your couch is a few inches away from the wall, it will not block light, look misplaced or cluttered. Center your lovely couch on the wall it currently is on (pulled about 5-7 inches from the wall) and flank your attractive blue armless chairs on either side. This will allow for your piano to become a focal point for those seated, while also creating an attractive view from the areas facing into this room. Purchase elegant, vintage end tables to place between the chairs and the couch. An interesting, sophisticated vibe can be created by choosing different shaped tables with the same dimensions and materials. The neutral wall color is visually pleasing and goes well with the couch. Your lamp next the the couch has great design and shape! Replace the existing lampshade with a more modern design. Above the piano, create a gallery wall with black and white photos in white, gold, and silver frames. Use photos that are personal to you (photos of your grandparents as children, prints of your travels, etc.) Keep the simplicity in the room. It looks lovely. Cannot wait to see the final result! Reply to: Like Jillius, I also wondered about moving the door farther along that wall, either to the end, as she has drawn, or to the farthest right window along the top wall, like this: This allows you to keep a small eat-in area, sufficient for 2 people for snacking, coffee, visiting, etc. It's not large enough to seat your family. Paint the porch area Dreamy white or wind fresh white Paint the door underseas Paint the railing Folkstone 5 window trim should be the dreamy white or wind fresh white, whichever you do for the porch area. Some hanging flower baskets over the railing and bright colors and white flowers. Super cute house!

Reply to: Removing the hedge would be my first priority. Even with the railing gone, the hedge will block the view. AND it requires lots of maintenance to keep it in check. Here's a more open railing style I like. Steps at the high end of the porch would be a nice addition to access the woodpile too.

Reply to: Thank you all for your advice! Really appreciate it. The siding is actually wood, not vinyl and we did add that. I picked the green paint (which I'm now regretting but I think it just looks off since theres no greenery right now) We are going to have screens made for the windows and I think I will paint them olive green to make to add some detail. I also saw this photo and thought adding another post and a railing like this might help? thoughts?

Reply to: Hi there, Are these real bronze? Depending on the size of the house, that estimate does seem a tad high if they are a powder-coated aluminum. But like everything else, the cost of gutters has skyrocketed in the last ten years. I'd get some other estimates. That said, if your current gutters are in good shape, paint them a darkish brown, and rub them lightly with a watered-down aqua paint, which will mimic aged copper beautifully. I specified this treatment using a latex exterior paint on existing aluminum gutters for a Tudor residence in Rumson, New Jersey; it looked amazing and has held up for the past 20 years. The base was applied with a 4" roller, brushed immediately following with a 2 1/2" brush. When it dried, the dull aqua was lightly applied with the same brush, and rubbed with a damp cloth. The entire house, with gutters running back and front about 60' on each facade, and including four two-storey and two one-storey downspouts took two painters less than one day! Best, Mark J. Reply to: Hi, mc15. A few years back we lived in a house with a small kitchen. We found all sorts of ways to maximize the space. A popup/popdown countertop was one of those. Similar to ucgal's picture, we made it from Maple butcher block and two braces because it was wider than the end cabinet. Unfortunately, I don't have any digital pictures. BUT, we liked it so much that we installed a similar shelf in our current laundry room -- though it is not maple butcher block. The pictures below show you what it looks like from above and from below. My only advice is that you may need to shore up the end of the cabinet if you use heavy butcher block.
