Having a hard time selecting pedant lighting for our new kitchen. The kitchen was extremely dark with just (1) ceiling fan as the only light in the room. We have added housing for (3) pendant lights above a newly installed island, (1) pendant light above the sink and we're adding under cabinet lighting and in-crown molding lights. I love the style of "metal dome" light pendants but think "glass dome" lights would give off so much more light to the room instead of just shooting directly down to the island counters. Anybody else have this dilemma?

Thank you Paul for this well written, informative article. My 13' x 24' kitchen renovation started this week and the 10'-6" long, 39" wide island, with large single sink, centered within should be installed within a few weeks. On the island, the cabinetry will be black shaker-style and the countertop will be Cambria Brittanica quartz (the other L-shaped cabinetry on exterior walls will be medium gray with same countertop and featured a double sink). Two new windows each 72"x40" will soon be installed above the long-wall counter facing west. The ceiling height is 8' and will feature 8 pot lights in the rectangular track around the island; the few upper cabinets will have recessed lighting. If I stick to the Rule of Three, seems I will need relatively wide-mouthed pendants to ensure light is cast on the full surface. I am leaning toward the chrome-finished industrial lights with 14-16" diameter/width and 12" height but still wonder if this will be proportionate and if pendants will "throw" enough light. This island is expected to be the workhorse of the new kitchen. I am enclosing a drawing provided by my cabinetry contractor to pull the describe above together.
