Reply to: We had a very wet spring. Since June it had been very dry till mid July. Then non-stop rain over a week. I think that is a hard test for a lot of roses Perfectly (almost) clean: Summer romance, Gertrude Jekyll (big surprise), Purple Prince, Desdemona, Pomponella, Earth Angel, raspberry cupcake, Bolero, Golden Opportunity, Beverly Mostly OK: PcdM, Love Song, own-root Fun in the Sun (I rooted as a back up for fear of voles in the winter, and might replace the original), Ebb Tide, top cream, pop arts, queen of Sweden BS quite bad but bloom away: Julia Child, raspberry cream twirl, lady in red, lady of shallot, Graham Thomas BS bad and some might be removed: Fun in the Sun ( grafted), lavender crush, Evelyn, fire fighters

Reply to: Artist, I got a message from Fig about your situation. Yes, you can save your plants. You need to soak them overnight and then pot them in a 5 gal pot in potting mix. Keep them well watered and place them in a shady area at first. You can keep them in a pot over the Summer at least or longer if you prefer. I did not cut my plants back. Miraculously, they grew roots and came back if I discovered them before they totally dried out. I did not lose one. I replanted them in the ground in Diggers Heavy Duty root guard 5 gal baskets. None of the replants have had this happen again. This is for 12 baskets. You really need these heavy duty ones. I still have hundreds of roses that are in the ground without a basket, but I feel so much better knowing the basketed roses are safe. I'm planting all in baskets going forward. I also use a Gopher Hawk to catch gophers with success. Good luck Artist. I'll try to find the thread where you can see my photos.

Reply to: Forever, I believe that it is Mystic Spires and I have some in a different bed that has gotten pretty big. I have a Greggi that needs to go that even cut back is taking over the bed. Once that is gone I will have room for a front row joe shortie or maybe my mystery daylily.

I am looking at buying several roses from them and will inquire about each. And a suggestion for you, you would find a more receptive audience if you didn't enter a thread like this with the attitude people are amoral as opposed to ignorant. Starting with the suggestion about how to contact hybridizers who choose not to patent as you did with Heirloom. The entire issue of plant patents and patent fees and rights is very complicated and not easy to research for the uninitiated. Thanks.

Reply to: People are hunting down DA discontinued roses, the ones that they know grow for a particular climate/location. Roses like Evelyn, Radio Times, Munstead Wood, Heritage, Abraham Darby, Sharifa Asma, Graham Thomas, Lady Emma Hamilton, Pat Austin, etc. etc. There are some nurseries.... that now that DA kicked them out - are waiting for varieties to go off patent, and are selling the off patent, discontinued varieties legally. With great success apparently. I got 8 DA grafted on Fortuniana from K&M myself. I was fortunate (no pun intended!)

Reply to: Roses I could do without?????! Anything common like "oso easy" and "at last" and especially knockouts. They drive me nuts they are so boring and basic. I love big hybrid teas like Blue Moon and Le Petit Prince.

What zone is your friend is living in? You are zone 5~6, so it will unlikely over winter for you. Have you tried digging it out, potting up and over wintering in the garage? Mine is a purple-white 2 color variety

Reply to: Rosecanadian, what kind of potting soil did you use for strawberries? We used to have three pear trees...you're supposed to have a couple of trees for pollination. We're down to one pear tree but it is being pollinated by some pear tree in the area, and the only pears I see are ornamental non-fruiting Bradford pears. So it is interesting that it seems an ornamental can pollinate a fruiting tree. We had tons of pears this year but we didn't eat that many. The bees are crazy about the fallen fruit...I think maybe it ferments and they get drunk. I saw a bumblebee stumbling around. Here's my new St. Ethelburga as it got prettier and prettier: Seasiderooftop, it seems to me that a lot of people have trouble rooting cuttings at first. If you just persist, maybe even doing the same thing, you're apt to succeed. Once you succeed, the cuttings know you know what you're doing and they fall in line, ha. It's not unusual for me to have an entire batch of cuttings fail and a subsequent batch of the same plant to succeed. I just keep trying.

Reply to: Kristine, the blush at the edge of your Violets pride is very pretty. Rose wise, at the beginning of this year, I only had a Julia Child and a couple knockouts (which I removed due to black spots), and now I have 19. But I feel the biggest asset I get is the knowkedge and kindness from this forum. My pollinator garden is a great success this year and attract many bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. We have seen at least 6 different types of swallowtail butterflies, though monarch is still the dominant. We have zebras as regular visitors, though people told me it is rarely seen in east coast. Our fruit trees are almost a complete failure. cannot win over the birds, squirrels , deers, etc. The exception is pomegranate. I planted the seeds 15 years ago and this is the first year we harvest the fruits (about 40 of them). they are the sweetest pomegranate I ever have had. Thanks everyone and happy gardening!
