@librarygroover: I am currently having a house built about 3 hours away. In this case what makes it work is having a contractor with great communication skills who has experience building for clients who are not local. We use Facetime to do virtual walk-throughs weekly and every decision gets documented in writing. I also do on-site visits at critical junctures. Since I am doing all of the interior design I'm very closely involved and in touch with the contractor daily. If not for my ability to be highly involved, I'd definitely have hired a local project manager or architect to keep tabs on the project.

It is always wise to have a home inspection done to see if the work being done is in line with what is needed. A home inspection is a great investment to give you a guideline on what is needed and required and can save you money in the long run!

Agree with slrslr! Be sure your pets are safe and secure. That should have been included in the body of the article which is otherwise extremely helpful.
