Benjamin Vogt / Monarch Gardens

rustytig -- When we design / plant with Rudbeckia hirta we now use far fewer plants, since they do reseed. However, in a thick, layered, lush design they get easily outcompeted in a few years since they are more of a pioneer species. Over time they provide small, gentle surprises. They are GREAT however for weed suppression the first two years and other perennials spend time working on root growth.

I was always under the impression and it has been my observation that mulching leaves (adding organic matter) into the lawn lower the ph of the soil which is more conducive to weed seed germination. Do you add lime to counter this or does god just love you more than me? Maybe you have alkaline rain?
