Looking at th PIC of the high tank cistern with the B&W loo seat...no its not required - a high tank so black seat! We had a high tank with a pull-the-chain loo when I was a child..The house was a single fronted old Victorian place in Malvern. The loo was outside next to the laundry shed. On that side of the house block there was a grey stone cobbled laneway. Our fence had a two gates off the laneway...one for once-apon-a-time grocery, bakery, butchery and ice deliveries (we had an ice box - no fridge.) The s maller gate was low to the ground...used to be for the sanitary man to remove and replace the loo bin long before there was a cistern hanging on high. What we had in the 1950'...from the 1930s '40s was a refurbished version of the outside dunny. A wrought iron cistern with adornments and the forge emblem , a really nice hand made chain that I coveted for a necklace...(I was a bit eccentric even then and I still remember it today.) A long carved mahogany handle at the end of the chain and....a beautiful mahogany side to side bench with two well crafted holes shaped appropriately equally beautiful and comfy. ..".one for wees and one for woos" my Mum explained when little me asked did we have to go to the toilet together. One of the hole covers was scewed down and Mum had placed there a tidy little lidded box for extra toiet paper. The two hole covers were attached to the bench with generous decorative brass hinges...which Mum kept shiny with Brasso. These hole covers were also of beautiful mahogany, equally well formed. A very nicely presented piece of built in furniture in fact! Former owners of the old place had kept that seat scrubbed and disinfected and well oiled and Mum carried on the tradition. Later we got an inside toilet...with a more modern but still on high cistern, a pull chain with a neat little mahogany handle...and the toilet seat...was well oiled and polished mahogany....nice and warm! Pity they painted it black when it became trendy. Originally toilet seats were made of wood and hardly ever painted unless a homeowner decided they wanted colour...like ..yes, Art Deco Cobalt ! With the invention of plastic came all the coloured toilet seats. Maybe there are still some around. My little old house here had a turquoise plastic one a vitteous porcelain bowl and a low brass cistern with a side to side push handle.

My siamse cats wre intrigued. On night I heard terrible yowling noise. Scared out of my wits and all alone in an old house in a strange place I crept around witth a torch not daring to turn on the light. There it was! One siamese sitting atop the cistern pushing the flush handle with the mechanics of th cistern scraping and thumping and th other fellow on his hind legs with head down the toilet.(having lifted the light plastic seat) youling at the water. That cistern went along with the blue plastic seat. These were replced by...guess what...a very nice refurbished, ornate high tank and..a polished mahogany seat that all my visitors covet!
