We live in a loft. Lofts are big on space but short on storage, and without a door to close and everything visible, it doesn't take much to look very messy, very fast.

The bedroom has no closets. Just the bed, a few trunks, art, side tables with lamps. The trunks hold sheets and blankets and winter/summer clothing, so access is limited. I don't own a bureau - I use a pie safe and separate my underwear, socks, etc, in baskets, folded and rolled. No kitchen cabinets, instead a variety of bottles and jars with pasta, hot peppers, popcorn, peanuts, coffee, rice etc etc on a long shelf. Everything else is in antique cabinets with shelves and drawers. Nobody but us can find anything because nothing is in the usual kitchen location, but we can. The kitchen counter holds all the colorful bowls that we use and almost nothing else. Huge old drawers hold tupperware, utensils, foil, plastic bags - all that stuff organized by drawer and in containers, so nothing sits out. Books we are currently reading are kept in a lidded copper cauldron in the living area. The coffee table is an old trunk with a side drawer for remotes etc, so they never sit out. I am with the bomb mom - it takes much less time to be organized than to find things in chaos. But I kind of envy those who can be comfortable with disorganization. I am not, so I organize to keep my mind calm, so the choice is a need, not just a preference.

Agreed, small things make a big difference. Custom storage solutions help too. If everything has it's place, it's more likely to end up there!
