Earlier I posted my desire to replace all my windows. I did in 2012 -- with high-grade vinyl-framed windows, probably the best decision I ever made. One of those companies who custom-builds your windows, double-paned, clean-from-the-inside w/screens and guaranteed for life. It absolutely improved the outside and improved my inside temp. For $600/window. I could not have done it with wood-framed for that price.

I agree with alkemie regarding to look of vinyl windows...I'm going nuts because my husband wants to replace our original wood windows in our early 1960s colonial with vinyl windows. I've already said no flat mullions or removable ones, that is just silly. Have another person coming to give me an estimate tomorrow. I'd rather put storm windows back on - he had them taken off when we had the wood work painted this spring - they were hauled off. Some windows won't open and stay because the mechanism that holds the window up is broken...if we could get those fixed... where to look?

My husband and I are going to do some renovations. We've been stuck on what to do with our windows. It's nice to know that sometimes it can actually cost more restore it than it would be to completely replace the windows.
