Coffer, sometimes referred to as a tray ceiling. This coffer was added into the floor system above as the new addition above was being built. TIP: You cannot add a coffer to a ceiling after it has been built without re-engineering the entire floor system above. The way to achieve the same effect afterwards is to build a soffit "down" lowering the ceilings on the side. This is not always desireable. The coffer pictured was engineered as a 12" floor system with the coffer being a 6" floor system within it.
