Hospital Corners: The Appeal of the Tailored Bed

Big fluffy beds covered in pillows and blankets might be comfortable and inviting, but sometimes they also look a little messy. I'm partial to a more tailored look in the bedroom - tightly tucked sheets, smooth bedspreads, minimum fuss. Neat and crisp and clean - that's what helps me get to sleep at night.

Here are some great examples of my ideal beds:

Simply made beds are ideal complements for rooms with lots of architectural details, like this one. I love that the bed allows the room's arches and additions to take center stage.

Navy is a fantastic color for a tailored bed and I like how its used here in a darker setting. This is a serious bedroom - no nonsense, but also very cool.

Or maybe this is the minimalist little girl's dream bed. I love the clean lines combined with a crazy color. On one hand, it's over the top, but on the other, it's perfectly simple and tailored. Great combination.

Crisp and tailored doesn't always mean a commitment to solid, neutral colors. I love this simple pattern and the addition of a neatly folded blanket and simple decorative pillow. It's clean and tailored, but not overly minimal.

When I think "tailored," canopies don't usually come to mind. However, this bed challenges my assumptions. All white linens and crisp drapery give the bed a peaceful, neat feeling. But it's so cool - like a minimalist little girl's dream bed.

And again, a sweetly simple bed complements a great view and, in this case, beautiful wood accents. I especially like the way this bed lets the ceiling be the star. The bed itself is the focus of the room's use, but not its aesthetics.

Again, a tailored bed works in concert with nature. This minimal space has a high zen factor - though the bed isn't cushy, it's simplicity and placement are inviting.

There must be something about tailored beds and giant windows with great views, because like the photo above, this simply covered bed is a perfect complement to a gorgeous yard.

I love this room for a lot of reasons - the antler chandelier, the Eames chair, the windows, and of course, the bed. The bed's unassuming stature takes a backseat to the rest of the room, but it doesn't completely fade into the background. I love its low profile, smooth spread and minimal color.
