If using herringbone pattern for tile floor in a somewhat narrow room (moderate size hallway bathroom), which orientation of the pattern makes more sense?

I love the contemporary look of a chevron pattern, but I would love a marble herringbone back splash in my kitchen one day- it's so classic~
